hi I just made my first real character a Blood Elf mage and I hear that people say you should choose two gathering professions. I have enchant and tailoring but should i change to herb/leather or any combination??

Well it's totally up to you. If you want to be an enchanter/tailor go for it, just be aware that you will be broke all the time :) They can be fairly expensive to level up if you buy the mats from the auction house. If you get all the mats yourself, especially for enchanting, that means you won't be selling any of the green items you get on the auction house. It is definitely possible to make money with the combo by tailoring green items and disenchanting them to sell/level enchanting but it takes more work.

My first character took herbalism and skinning and never had a problem with money. My second character is a tailor/enchanter but was helped out a lot by my main character sending her money. If I was to start a new character on a different server right now, I would go with mining and skinning. Mining should make you quite a bit of money right now as people level up jewelcrafting with the expansion. Skinning is great for leveling as you kill a lot of mobs you can skin. It doesn't bring in tonnes of money, but it's constant. Once you're higher level and have a stash of gold saved, you can always then drop either mining or skinning and pick up blacksmithing, engineering, jewelcrafting or leatherworking (whichever is complimented by the gathering skill you chose to keep).

Just my 2 cents :) Oh, and level fishing when you're bored. Something else that can bring in decent cash once you work on it a bit.

Depending on your server economy, you can actually make money out of tailoring/enchanting. Get the pattern for brown linen robe. That'd be your cheap source of strange dust and lesser magic essence. I found that I can actually turn a profit by buying linen cloth and selling the dusts and essences back to the AH. (This is because I can reliably get linen cloth under 15s a stack). I can't turn a profit using woolen cloth, as they seem to be quite rare. For silk cloths, if I can get 20 for under 40s, I can make a profit disenchanting azure silk cloaks. The recipe for this is limited supply from a vendor.

Basically, be smart at the AH and you won't be broke. Don't disenchant all your greens. List them at AH first and if they don't sell more than the dust will, disenchant for your own use or profit. Check the AH for cheap enchanting mats, or cheap greens and blues. The same with tailoring. Don't blindly turn all your cloths into products. You just need to level enough so you can make products out of the cloths you are currently getting from monsters and making the robes/bags you want. Buy cheap cloths from the AH, and sell all excess cloths you have.

PS. Forgot to add that this is my first char so I don't have any rich level 60s to supply me with gold and equipment. I dinged 40 yesterday with 150g. You probably can get more gold from 2 gathering professions (I heard someone got 120g left after buying his mount). But you will still be comfortable gold-wise with tailoring/enchanting. And crafting professions actually are useful to your leveling if no one is supplying you with uber equipment.
