how do I learn to smelt dark iron
Get the following mats:
20 Gold Bars
10 Truesilver Bars
2 Star Rubies
Then go to BRD, to the room with 7 ghost dwarves. Speak to Gloom'Rel (before the event is started) and he will teach you in return for the mats.

Can you only smelt in that area or once you have learned can you do it in any blacksmith area?
Dark Iron can only be smelted at the dark forge or whatever its called in Blackrock Depths.
its 4 star rubies, not 2

If it hasn't changed you can only smelt on that special place guarded by a Fire Elemental left of the bridge over to MC in BRD after the Seven Dwarfs encounter, but before the Lyceum (AoE room).
