heya trade forum ppls. long time reader, first time poster since converting from ffxi.allakhazam.com (land of suck)

ok, im a tauren warrior on firetree (currently 28)
i started out as an herb/alch just cuz of the racial bonus, but after about 115 levels i got seriously bored so i dropped em both for mining/smithing and LOVE it. im currently 175smithing and 140mining, and here is where my question is.

mining is great for funding my smithing as well as providing materials. thing is, once i hit 300 smithing, i dont know if ill kieep the mining skill. i was thinking about using the smithing at that point to fund enchanting, so id be able to enchant gear as well as make it.

only been playing a month or so now, so please dont flame if that sounds like a dumb idea. just would like some input, because all my RL friends that play cant seem to agree on anything, and while my guild has been funding a lot of my levelling, nobody in it knows much about high level smithing.

from what ive read, it appears that enchanting is kind of a self supporting profession insofar that it doesnt require a gathering craft to match it.

I'm not certain that smithing (even at 300 skill) is a self-supporting tradeskill if you have to end up buying mats at the AH. You will have to find some sort of niche market (perhaps in items that are needed to fulfill quests?) in order to find a consistent income.

I look at enchanting as a gathering skill, mainy because you get mats from disenchanting items, and those mats sell well. You need to look at "How to make lots of money with DE (guide)". Once you have a good backlog of mats, you can use them to level Enchanting, while still amking lots of gold.

Well, I don't think that dropping mining and picking up enchanting will make you very happy. Sure, you can try it. But, keep in mind, you have to buy enchanting skill and if you don't like it than you gotta buy mining back again (or some other profession) and you're back at 0 again.

The reason mining goes so well with blacksmithing is because you don't have to buy your supplies on the auction house (which can be very costly in the end). For enchanting, however, I can really only see it going with two other professions -- skinning (you can enchant the leather) or tailoring (since you're making stuff).

Yes, you could disenchant, but from what I've seen items are greeded by your whole group up until around Sunken Temple (level 50-ish). Then, items which would normally be greeded are passed and given to disenchanter. Even then, you don't get to keep the shard. Groups then /roll for the shard, and you give it to the winner.

If I were in your position, I would suggest keeping mining and blacksmithing. Besides, once you get up to level 60/70, you can make another character and give them different professions.

Hope this helps.

..and the 2.0 patch wont let you disenchant the higher lvl items anymore ..so you have to lvl enchantment up before making actual money with a guide like Mike suggested or disenchant the blues you come across for shards...

I suggest keep mining and if you really wanna have another skill like enchanting then i say drop BS. When you are able to mine Dark iron and melt them you will have a good cash flow...

c'mon, how hard is it to get to level 20? After getting to L20, I was at 225 Enchanting in less than 1 hour.

Not really hard no, i just pointed out that you need to do a time investment now before you can disenchant your way to your BoE-epics.
Before it was easy: just take a lvl 1, pick-up enchanting and done: you are now a disenchanter! Now you (indeed) need to be lvl 20 first and get ur *** toward the 225 + Just less easy nowadays.
