Right now i have herbalism<60> and skinning <180>because friends advised me to gather and sell for insane amounts of cash, but another friends recomended Engenereing and mining because im a rogue to give me an edge if I do eng and mining will I still be able to make enough cash to get by instead of going out and farming all day? I know eng sucks for selling because you cant realy sell anything you make but I also pvp alot so can anyone help me decide?

I've done two different set-ups with my rogues; Alchemy/Herbalism and Mining/Engineering. For quick cash, mining is good, but you'll be stuck selling copper bars by the stack for a damn long time, spending hours (depending on the server/location) trying to find enough copper to make a stack, then having none for yourself.

Alchemy/herbalism can be a definite money-maker... After a certain point. It's also a lot easier to find herbs in most locations than metals. The difficult part is getting to the point where it's profitable to sell both herbs and potions.

In terms of which will benefit you more, it's all preference. Alchemy can give some nice buffs, quick heals, mana recharges, and some useful non-direct combat benefits (Water breathing, free action, and more). Engineering gives bombs, which have AoE, which nobody expects from a rogue.

You'll also find there are things from both professions that people love to have. The above mentioned free action potion can sell in stacks for 3 to 5 gold on my server and take about half an hour to make if you're not skilled high in fishing. Engineering can make accuracy scopes and weapon chains which are lovely. Both also make items required by other professions.

Skinning, on the other hand, isn't quite the goldmine people make it out to be. 20 ruined scraps of leather will only be useful to a leatherworker, who likely has skinning himself. Again, on my server you'll see them for 30 silver in the AH on busy weekends. Once you hit high level beasts, you can certainly make some money... But that's all you're making, instead of anything you'll have a use for. You'll have to buy the things you could have made yourself with leatherworking, probably spending the money you got from skinning to do it. Not a bargain, if you ask me.

Not so. In general, the things you buy are better than anything you could make with leatherworking.

I know its not the point, and I shouldnt nit pick, but how is a free action potion a non-direct combat potion? Its really one of the better PvP potions we can make.

Again Im sorry for off topic, I just found it funny you listed free action with water breathing as non-direct combat potions.

Mining/Engineering can potentially be a great money maker. Stacks of metal bars sell quite well, as do some of the stones and gems that you'll get from mining. Even copper sells well, since it's needed so much to level blacksmithing and engineering... find a good place to mine and you're good to go... when you get to the point where you're mining iron/mithril you can make 15-20g in a few hours farming. Surprisingly you can sell quite a few of the component parts from engineering such as Mithril Casings, Delicate Arcanite Converters, Thorium Widgets and other such because they are used in quests (especially at high levels). You CAN also sell 'engineer only' gear to other engineers who may not be able (or want to learn how) to make those items (because of rare schematics and such). However, it will take quite a bit of money to rank your engineering up and it is still mostly a 'self-gratifying' profession.

I list it as non-direct because it's not a +stat. It doesn't directly affect your combat abilities and depends on the situation to come up for it to be useful.

Just as a small correction, blacksmithing makes weapon chains, not Engineering.
