As a rule the gathering skills, fishing, skinning, nerbalism and mining make more money than the crafting skills. At higher levels if you have rare recipes you will make money crafting, until then it is unlikely.

If I were you I would un-learn leatherworking and take up mining. With th expansion pack coming there will be a big demand for raw ore. Even at the moment there is a good demand for lower level bars. I regularly sell a stack of 20 copper bars for 80s-1g. Sell 100 stacks and you have your money for your mount.

Also good for money is fishing. If you are horde get to the Oasis that the entrance for WC is at and fish for deviate fish. Also fish off the barrens coast for oily blackmout, firefin snappers and floating wreckage, they all are worth something.
If you are Alliance go to Menethil Harbour in the Wetalnds and fish for blackmouths and snappers.

I'm new also and can make 4-5g a night from setting up my AH with crafted items. Currently 134 leather and making Dark Leather items to support my habits. Overall I haven't had a hard time or big money loss from leveling LC except maybe what I would've made by selling the leather I used. I don't mind though, if you're into making tons of money now then what I hear coincides with what Magret is saying. Take up two gathering skills and you'll be good to go. Personally I like crafting so I'm satisfied with how things are going.

Actually, there is a way to make money from leatherworking. Form an alliance with someone who makes money by disenchanting. I've found a few suppliers who sell me Hillman's Shoulders and Hillman's Leather Gloves at prices low enough where it's profitable for me, and profitable for the leatherworker as well. I try to stay around 5 items for one gold, and the mats I make from disenchanting I sell for approximately 2 gold. Both of us end up making money.

damn typos!

I was told this is a good starter craft for low level people is that true? (skinning i mean)

Skinning is good, as well as mining and herbalism, because you sell your materials for money on the AH instead of using them in a crafting profession. This way, you earn enough gold to buy incidental armor and weapon upgrades (but most should come through quested rewards and drops off mobs) and then, ultimately, your mount at level 40.

Many suggest that 40 is a good time to drop one gathering profession and acquire a crafting profession that compliments the 1 profession you kept. It's really up to you. Crafting can be fun but it takes more effort/thought to profit compared to selling the raw materials.

just stick it out in the leatherworking. you can make goood money doing leather working and farming your mats. case in point perfect deviate scales for deviate scale belt, spider's silk for toughened leather gloves etc etc.

see what sells good ok twinks they have money so you know the lower lvl blue recipes will tend to do well. i disagree with selling any mats ever. i saved mine and picked recipes that would give me skillups, even if i have to vendor said product after i was finished because AH was too low or vendor offered more.
i accomplished two things i still made a profit, and i was getting a higher Leatherworking at the same time. :) Leather working does not start to pay off untill later levels imo 250+ and by that i mean you can make some damn good money. at 300 i make *** loads of cash. build a client list, me i give discounts like if it's their 2nd or third time coming to me. or sometimes i just sit in UC when bored and do free crafting for people. just to get your name out there. the more people that know you as a crafter the more you will make and the more you will enjoy the crafting expirence of the game.
