if you want to make money i suggest having 2 gathering skills, herb/mining/skinning

this is good for cash and most sells for decent amount of cash

Yes, in general gathering skills = money. It will cost you some money to raise any of the production professions. Depending on what you make you can sometimes come out a few coppers ahead by selling to NPCs. But you sill have the cost of patterns, schematics… to deal with. I only recommend production professions to people who actually enjoy making things.

If you enjoy your blacksmithing then by all means keep it. To make mount money just concentrate on your mining. You can sell your ore/bars in the auction house. I did that with my rogue. He has skinning and mining. I took time out from leveling and farmed stuff to sell in the AH. Most of his money came from his mining. And once the expansion comes out having mining will come in very handy. The new profession uses raw ore and I’m sure its value will skyrocket in the AH for a time at least.

On the other hand, if you like the added buffs that alchemy can provide, then taking up herbalism and alchemy may be a good idea. If you remember to use potions, I usually don’t, then they can give you a nice boost for gaming. And many of the higher level herbs sell very well, and for good prices, in the AH.

Which path is best for you is something only you can decide.

I agree on the double gathering notion, however there are numerous paterns that youcan learn at a low enough alch level that can net you some profit, even if you have to <gasp> buy the mats from the AH.

I would not suggest sticking with blacksmithing, from what I hear from blacksmiths in general is that the items thatcan be made from their craft is not nearly as shiny as those items that you can gather from drops.

Also, do not neglect your secondary profs, well lets just say not to neglect fishing shall we? Fishing may not seem like much early on, but once its maxed out, with some gear to buff it up a bit higher, you can fish up stonescale eels, and use your alchy to convert the eels into oils (which sell for a great chunk of change).

As it've already been told, 2 gathering skills is good for making money.
But herb/alch is pretty cheap, have it on my warrior and you basiclly just need the herbs you can gater + vials, wich are cheap in the lower skilllevels.
Potions are good for selling, since some are used in other professions, like lw, tailoring and enchanting.

Save yourself a lot of heartache and disappointment: don't do blacksmithy. No matter what any well meaning or self righteous person tells you about the joys of blacksmithy, I promise that what you don't know will never make any difference. Just don't.
