Trade skills for a druidFollow

I'm brand new to WoW and coming over from FFXI, so the trade skill system in this game is entirely new to me. In FFXI, unless you were a NIN or RNG, trade skills were essentially independent of class, while here it seems as though most people will pick a trade skill that helps themselves.

I've always liked mining and smithing (in FFXI), but now I'm playing a Druid and it seems like those would be pretty useless. Can anyone recommend a combination for me? I just hit level 10 and I'm open to pretty much anything (including the aforementioned combination, if it turns out to be a moneymaker).

Depends on what you want...

If you want money, then get 2 "money-making" proffessions, ie Mining (which you like) and Herbalism (the art of picking flowers). This is especially useful if you are goning to spec in Feral (cat form for prowl=easier mining/picking).
If you want armor, Skinning/Leatherworking is best.
If you don't want armor, but want to make useful things, Herbalism/Alchemy is good. You can make good potions (healing, mana,...).
If you don't want any of those, Tailor/Enchanter is also an option, although not the best. This lets you make some good cloth armor, which is essential if you are going to spec into Balanced or Resto (Damage dealer and healer respectivly).

But again, it's a matter of preference, which ever fits you, and don't forget, you can always switch back and forth (although you lose all progress made)

Just to clarify, it's probably not a good idea to take both Mining and Herbalism at once since you can only have one "radar" active at a time. Not that it can't be done, but it's kind of a pain.

Generally if folks are going for 2 gathering skills they will do either Mining or Herbalism, and then also take Skinning. Skinning doesn't have a "radar" - you skin beasts that you are killing anyway and sell the leather you get. And you can skin when you're in bear or cat form.

I'm going to give you the same answer that I gave in another thread...

A lot depends on what you want your main focus for your tradeskills to be. Do you want to make gold, or do you want to create things for yourself to use? The two goals are mutually exclusive.

Production skills don't make money unless you can find a niche (and niches usually come only at high levels of the tradeskill). Not only that, but production skills will use up the materials you gather with your gathering skill, so you end up not making any gold by selling mats. Production skills, however, can produce items that you can use for yourself.

Gathering skills will get you gold, but won't make you any potions, armor, weapons, or enchantements. On the other hand, they will get you enough gold to buy those.
