I've done a search here for deeprock salt and tried most of the places listed,but it seems to have a poor drop-rate.In your experience what area yielded the most salt drops as I'm in need of it in large amounts...

I get mine from the golems or what ever they are in Searing Gorge. A couple of minutes there does the trick.
I dont tend to grind for a large amount due to the cooldown on the saltshaker. Once every three days to get a couple is enough IMO.

Do uldaman or mara runs. I always seem to end up with some there. Never in large quantities though. Honestly if you need huge amounts that bad, it might be better to just farm stuff to get money to buy it off the AH. If you're getting so few per kill, that would definatly be faster.
I picked up quite a bit while killing the elementals in the Badlands. Do this quest line and you will get experience, Deeprock Salt, and Elemental Earth.

As an engineer, is it worth making the salt shakers at all?
I'm an engineer and my hunter is a LW so I feel I can easily speak on this issue.

a LW only needs one and its usually not hard for a LW to find an engineer to make him one. Learn how to make them, but only reason to make them is when people ask you to.

I'll second the Badlands (rock elementals) post. I've been getting a lot from them.
i did the elemental quest line (part of it) in early july. and im still refining the salt from that trip. so for me badlands was best drop rate ive seen so far.
Or you could just buy them off the AH; on my server they are about 3s each. Large amounts of salt drop in Molten Core, so raiding guilds often auction them.
