Profession Change?Follow

Hello, I am a 49 Hunter currently using Skinning/Leatherworking. Up until this time I have been enjoying being able to make nifty gear for my own use, and armor kits / quiver's for other's. But recently my trade skill has become somewhat useless, my armor kits are simply sitting around, and I end up spending more money than I earn to up my leatherworking.

So my question is, to switch or not to switch?

My original idea was herbalism/alchemy. but I also thought that maybe mining/engineering or possibly even enchanting, if you guys and gals have any input, it would be appreciated.

If you are no longer enjoying your professions then perhaps its time for a change. If all you are looking for is money, two gathering professions tend to be the way to go. But if you enjoy making things then by all means try one of the other production professions.

Herbalism/Alchemy is a good combination, but only if you actually use the potions. I’m very bad about forgetting to use potions and they tend to sit in my packs gathering dust till I finally sell them. But potions will buff you no mater what your level and higher end herbs also sell well in the auction house. Its just a shame we can’t feed potions to our pets.

Mining/Engineering is also a good combination. Engineering is a great profession if you like playing with toys or blowing things up. I don’t think Engineering is as good a profession for a hunter as it is for some other classes, especially paladins that can’t gain ranged pulling attacks any other way. But its still a hoot if you enjoy such things. You can also sell stone and metal bars in the auction house, but on my server at least they don’t sell as well as herbs.

Enchanting is one of those professions that doesn’t really shine until higher levels. Enchanters are a copper a dozen. So the only way to really make money from it is to have some of the harder to get enchants. But its still fun to be able to enchant your own gear.

I say find something you think you will enjoy and give it a try. At worst you can always go back to skinning and leatherworking. Skinning is very very easy to level back up. Leatherworking is slower and you’ll have to buy all your patterns again, but it can be done.

You have to understand there are two types of crafting. Crafting to skill up and crafting to make money. There aren't many times when the two overlap. The only time they do is when you find a little niche of an item that people really want and you make that item for skillup. Honestly, if you want to make money, do 2 gathering skills. In addition many of the amorcrafting tradeskills (LW, tailor, BS) don't produce much better gear than you can get in instances.

Having said that, I really liked being a LW on my hunter. I actually didn't spend much time at all in instances (except ulda and mara) and I only came back to town to sell stuff or to get new skills. So being able to make new armor in the field was a huge plus for me.
