#1 Sep 18 2006 at 4:00 PM Rating: Decent
Iam new to WoW and will be getting it soon (within a week or two) and I was reading about classes and professions. I decided to go with an Acane/Frost Mage.

Now I need some help finding a profession. I ethier want... Herbalism and Alchmy, or Tailoring and Enchanting. If you think nethier of them, please tell me which one you think will best suit me.

(please also give some tips as I'am new)

Thanks.

If you're looking to make money, I have made a guide (which is in the process of being refined). You'll find the guide and a list of links I find useful in my signature.

To start, I think you should go with 2 gathering skills, just to help make some gold early on. You don't need any gear up to lv 10, you'll get random drops for upgrades, dont waste any money buying stuff, unless you really want to.

Enchanting is nice, BUT, I would not start the game as an enchanter. I would create an Alt toon however and make it an enchanter, just for disenchanting purposes. Now you have a choice to make. If you really want to become an enchanter, send all equipment that drops to the Alt toon and save all the enchanting mats you get from disenchanting. The other choice is to sell the mats you get.

Pick skinning, herb or mining. At an early stage in a characters life I found that you will cap your skills quickly so I would wait until you are approaching lv 35 to switch over to a prof like Alc or leatherworking.

Just remember to save all you gather for skilling up the final profession.

Personally, I would say take skinning and herb (or mining) up to 60. When you get to 60 and you buy your epic mount and such, you can decide what you want to do as far as a crafting profession. Unless you're on a very new server, there will be plenty of crafters to make whatever you need for you (provided a small tip). Via a gathering profession you'll easily make enough money to buy what you need.

Thanks, But why skinning? I heard its only really useful if you leather work, and I think I might go with herbalism and Alchmy, but I like the idea of gathering, but just why skinning exactly?

Skinning is easy!, that's the reason.

Many of the mobs/monsters that you kill will be skinnable. As you a searching their bodies for drops anyway, you might as well spend the extra three seconds skinning them. You won't make tons of money with the skins, but you will make consistent money with them. Just get yourself 4 of the biggest bags you can, on my server you can get 4 runecloth bags for under 10G, or 4 Mageweave ones for under 5G, and skin everything you kill. Also as a lot of quests have "kill x monsters" as a formula, people will leave around skinnable corpses. I still visit the Burning Steppes every so often to skin the dragons left by people on "the Dragonkin Menace".

I hope that clarifies things for you.

Well to start with just buy whatever bags you can afford. On the AH you will see small pouches and linen bags for a few silvers each. I would seriously look for a guild to join, there are often guildies who will make bags for next to nothing for you. You should sell you skins on the AH, they WILL NOT sell for as much as copper bars but they will sell. I personally only sell on Fridays and Saturdays when a lot of weekend players are on.

regarding herbalism or mining I would like to say that at lower levels mining is far more profitable than herbalism. Copper bars sell well, peacebloom not at all. However as you go up in skill the balance changes. Top end herbs sell far better than Thorium. Even with middling skill Wildvine, Swiftthistle and Kingsblood can bring in better profits than iron. It might, and I mean might, be worth learning mining for your first 15-20 levels, dropping it and picking up herbalism. All gathering skills level quite quickly.

I would also consider creating a "bank Alt". A character that you get to level 5 then move to the bank and leave him there. When you real character is out adventuring and fills up her bags, instead of heading to a major city you can just mail you stuff to the bank alt who can then put them on the Ah for you. Remeber that it takes 1 hour for mail to arrive, though if you just send money it is practically immediate. You should also think about training your alt in enchanting, to disenchant any green equipment that won't sell, and leatherworker to convert andy ruined leather scraps you skin into light leather.

Oh, and remeber to buy a skinning knife from a vendor, they are 81c.

Did anyone after me even bother to read my guide before responding? Smiley: dubious

Edit: Magret, your Bank Alt isn't a bad idea- with your permission, I may consider adding that to the guide when I next revise it. Smiley: boozing

Not my original idea, but please do. I find one invaluable, who wants to spend playing time travelling back?
