Doug Liman leaves Gambit and signs on to director Justice League: Dark instead.

Looks like Captain Marvel is still in the market looking for directors, and allegedly down to three candidates: Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria. At least according to Hollywood Reporter. On Twitter, Justin Kroll said "You're missing one" so who knows. No real word beyond that bit of gossip rumor journalism. In Dr Strange news, apparently Dan Harmon from Community wrong an additional scene or two for the movie, which would lead one to speculate that the executives didn't feel the movie was "funny" enough, which could be a bad sign.

Russos confirm that Steve Rogers isn't Captain America in their next movie, so let's boot up the speculation machine. You've got a Bucksicle out of the running, and Sam Wilson is with Steve so he's out as well. That leaves John Walker, the one time Captain America, an ultra conservative from Texas who later on took on Steve's third persona "US Agent." I'd say he was the most likely, though there are a few other options. William Burnside was the Captain America of the 50s, when Steve was still on ice. He was more of a fanboy that eventually went insane. There was also Roscoe Simons, who took up the shield and was eventually brutally slaughtered by the Red Skull.

Russia getting in on our super hero movies, and as the trailer for Guardians shows they gave a dude a bear head and a machine gun. I hope it gets released here just on that.

That Russian trailer... so odd. Part of me wants to watch it, the other thinks it's an Asylum level parody film with a foreign company doing it.

The Asylum level parody is what makes me want to watch it. Smiley: laugh

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the lineup for the future New Mutants movie has been announced, and will consist of Danielle Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball, Magik, and Warlock which makes up pretty much the whole '80s team. Also, Josh Boone has (again, allegedly) turned to some old coworkers, Scott Neustadter and Michael H Weber, from his time on The Fault in our Stars and The Spectacular Now to work on the script. Saying that, this would lead one to believe this one will be more targetted to the young adult crowd. So the Hunger Games or Divergence.

(I'll put this all here cause this is now just "General Media Entertainment Omnibus Thread" )

Sci-Fi is still going hard on the new scripted series. Good for them. There are a couple shows that have had their trailers getting a lot of air time. Premiering in September.

Van Helsing (But Van is a woman, Vanessa). I don't have high hopes for this one. Seems like those Underworld movies, and I wasn't too big on them. I'm suspecting Winona Earp with Vampires. And I stopped watching that show after a handful of episodes.

Channel Zero. I haven't looked into anything beyond the trailer. It appears to be one of those "weird stories" shows. Trailer shows a young kid giving teeth to what appears to be a creepy, tooth-skinned, Tooth Fairy creature. This one is probably top of my list for new Sci-Fi shows.

Aftermath. Not sure if this is related to alien abductions, natural disasters, or the rapture, or all of the above. I'll watch it, but I'm not really expecting much. Maybe it will surprise me.

And somehow they have a show being produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Incorporated. Trailer makes it seem pretty standard "Big Power Companies" deal. Seems like something that Fox would air, then cancel half-way through the first season. With it being on Sci-Fi, I'm guessing it actually has a chance.

Van Helsing looks awful. Channel Zero doesn't give nearly enough information for me be interested, really the same goes for Aftermath. Incorporated seems like the same old evil corporation that's above the law thing that's been done to death. I like the SciFi is putting in the effort, but so far they aren't impressing me.

Of the ScyFy shows, I think I'll give the Damon/Affleck project a shot simply because they tend to work well together. Also that tooth fairy one should be fun to record and show my daughter once she starts losing her baby teeth just to save myself a buck or two.
Jophiel wrote:

They got the bear and the sickle sword guy. They just need a magical Scarlet Ruskie and an Iron Comrade and we're there.

To the surprise of probably no people, but as you may remember during the last few episodes of last season's Flash Wally West wasn't the only one to get shocked by Speed Force when Barry was trying to get his powers back. As it turns out, the actress in question (Violett Beane) has been rumored to be seen suited up as a speedster on set herself. And considering her character is based on the wholy original nomenclature "Jessie Quick," we could see yet another GoesFastMan Woman the upcoming season.

Also things seen and unseen on sets, at least according to The Spoiling Dead, apparently Abraham and Glenn haven't been seen too often. Which, if you think about it, is a pretty good way to throw people off from guessing your cliffhanger. Killing two people instead of just the predicted one.

Ben Affleck shared a video of Slade Wilson, better known to geeks as Deathstroke, so he either shows up in Justice League or possibly be in the Batman solo movie.

Driving home today, there was a piece on NPR about low budget horror films. It was fueled by the success of Don't Breathe this past weekend (29 million box office, 10 million budget). They were talking to the guy behind the studio for Paranormal Activity (apparently the first one had a budget of 15,000...)

I'd imagine that the ease of production of these low budget "horror" films makes the very tempting to small investors. And Blair Witch is one that is already written.

There's been three Hulk, two three Spider-Man, two Superman, two Batman and two Fantastic Fours in that time. I figure it's the studio has some money set aside to redo the movie with a higher budget. Which, sure, why not?

I mean, you know, besides all the times they do just that and the movie stinks?
TirithRR wrote:

I imagine the studios can also risk more money on them now that they're so focused on summer tentpole movies.

David Meunier signs on to play a Russian mobster named Ishmael Gregor for next season's Arrow. Which is weird, because reports have said that next season was going to be less "magic" and Call Me Ishmael is a big red fiery dude with horns and hooves. If Justified is any indication then at least Meunier has the hairline to support horns and the goatee to support being evil. Also in casting news, apparently there was some truth to the Supergirl Metallo rumor, as Frederick Schmidt has been cast for the character.

Rumor has it that Marvel (and ABC) is developing a small screen comedy adaptation of the New Warriors starring Squirrel Girl, who had nothing to do with the New Warriors who in turn had little to do with comedy. I guess they don't want to use the Great Lakes Avengers name.

Last week a cast sheet was leaked online for a scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This week, Hannibal Buress said in an interview "In Spider-Man, I play a gym teacher. I play one of the dumbass characters that don't realize he's Spider-Man. [My character thinks] ‘He’s Peter Parker. Oh man, this guy’s really athletic!” which gives some legitimacy to the sheet in question. If true, that means in addition to Keaten as Vulture (Seriously how great is that?), we've also got Thinker and Shocker in addition to like a week's worth of Nickelodeon tween stars. Zendaya has been all but confirmed as Mary Jane, though possible she'll just have the initials 'MJ' so the writers can gouge audience reaction and possibly introduce a more comic faithful Mary Jane sometime down the road or just say Z was her all along.

Some Reddit tier rumors. Apparently some production notes were "leaked accidentally." Again, all rumors, all found on Reddit.

Man of Steel 2: Will be 2020, and the main villain will be Brainiac, who is the result of Lexenberg using alien tech to enhance an existing Lex Operating System which sounds remarkably like the first half of Age of Ultron. Warner is also trying to recruit the likes of JJ Abrams and Duncan Jones to direct the film, and considering Abrams once almost directed a Superman flick called Flyby not exactly unrealistic.

Justice League: Lexenberg is here as well, who will be freed from prison by Steppenwolf, who in turn is helped to Earth in exchange for technology and information (which could lead to the Brainiac rumors). Superman will show up which is less a rumor than it is the painfully obvious conclusion anyone with two brain cells to rub together would come to, but he'll have his '90s beard, long hair, and tattered black suit similar to his reappearance after he died to Doomsday in the books. The report also claims that there will be a scene involving Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), where they are committing a crime and expecting to be caught by Batman, only, the whole Justice League shows up, and it's a comedic "Holy shit!" moment.

The report also claims that a Green Lntern will show up, possibly as a mid/end-credits teaser because every movie needs one of those.

Also Darkseid may be on hold for a while, as the report notes that Warner doesn't want a comparison to Thanos at the time. It goes on to bring up the Injustice League, Crime Syndicate, and The Society (all great names, right?) as options for Justice League 2 and beyond.

Teen Titans: Now that Deathstroke has been shown to exist, played by Joe Manganiello, the leaked report says he'll be the Teen Titans main villain, and Nightwing will be in the DCEU by the time actual word of this movie comes out, so there's that. The report goes on to say that Cyborg won't be in the movie since he'll still be showing up on The Flash

Aquaman: Aqualad'll be showing up. Because a movie building around Jason Momoa's stoicity needs a silly kid sidekick.

The Flash: Captain Cold will be the main rogue, who was repeatedly described as "creepy," and will wear a sleek mechanical suit that has the same colo scheme and pattern as his book version. Because the red paintball Stark-Tech armor Flash wears wasn't bad enough.

Random Casting: Just gonna copy and paste this.
Rumored Casting wrote:
Luke Evans was approached to play Sinestro in a Green Lantern movie.

Rob Lowe has been asked to play a villain in The Flash movie. DCEU really wants Rob Lowe as a villainous character.

Misha Collins, Channing Tatum, Milo Ventimiglia, Steven Yeun, and Jake Gyllenhaal have all been offered DCEU roles.

Emily Blunt, Rosamund Pike, Alexandria Daddario, and Jessica Chastain have also been offered DCEU roles.

We may see a new lineup in Suicide Squad 2, though that movie might be pushed to 2021, and it's unlikely that David Ayer will direct.

According to Deadline, Greg Berlanti is developing a live-action Black Lightning TV drama with husband/wife duo Mara Brock and Salim Akil. "Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce. He made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend — Black Lightning." The whole "old superhero picks mantle back up to help daughter and locals" is an interesting premise for me, though it being a Greg Berlanti destined for CW love triangle soap opera makes me cautious.

Couple of Shocker, possibly Bokeem Woodbine, set pics from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Not a particular fan of the leather vest jacket, but that quilt pattern and the gauntlets more than makes up for it.

Over the weekend in Canada's Fan Expo, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill dropped hints that the next two Batman animated movies will be based off the Hush and A Death In The Family storylines. I haven't read Hush, but A Death In The Family is where Joker kills off Jason Todd with a crowbar and who wouldn't want to see that again?

Episode titles for Luke Cage, all based on Gang Starr songs. Not my wheelhouse, but have some links to the songs as well courtesy of comicbookmovies.

Agents of SHIELD season 4 synopsis wrote:
VENGEANCE COMES TO ‘MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ ON THE SEASON FOUR PREMIERE ON ABC

Gabriel Luna Guest Stars as Robbie Reyes – aka Ghost Rider. In the season premiere episode, “The Ghost,” Ghost Rider is coming, and S.H.I.E.L.D will never be the same.

Guest starring are Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez, Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes, Mallory Jansen as Aida, Lorenzo James Henrie as Gabe, Briana Venskus as Agent Piper, Max Osinski as Agent Red, Ricardo Walker as Agent Prince, Edward Gelhaus as skinhead, Ian Hutton as Blondie, Blaise Miller as lab tech, Samuel Barajas as Felix, Bryan Rasmussen as warehouse manager, Wilson Ramirez as Diego, Jen Kuo Sung as Chen, Jerry Ying as thug #1 and Lilli Birdsell as Lucy.
Greg Berlanti says his Booster Gold movie won't be a part of the greater DCEU with Cavill's Superman and Batfleck.

Another Netflix clip for Luke Cage. Still not the 30th.

It was only a matter of time, but with Robbie Reyes comes his little brother Gabe, who has been confirmed. Lorenzo James Henrie, who some of us may know as Chris from Fear the Walking Dead has been hired to be the wheelchair bound little brother of the Spirit of Vengeance. He's also rumored to be showing up in Spider-Man: Homecoming so if true this is a pretty big year for the kid.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, which is the newspaper to go to for interviews like this, Geoff Johns and producer Jon Berg basically said that they finally heard what the audience's complaints about their movies, specifically Justice League, and are course correcting to "accelerate the story to get to the hope and optimism a little faster." It's weird. I think what they should do is get a better director in charge of the whole project and work at being a little darker than the Marvel movies, since we already have the Marvel movies for the lighter approach. Audience approval ratings for the first three movies are all sub 70%, so of course they're going to need to do something, though the movies also make some bank as well. For me, personally, it's just too late and I don't feel I'll be going to the theaters to see the movies, even if they offer free tickets again. Overall, good idea for a tonal change. It certainly is one of the top things necessary changes.

Greg Berlanti's Black Lightning gets a pilot production commitment, but over at Fox and not CW. I imagine part of it is because CW is already pretty overloaded with comic shows.

Steven Tyler is campaigning to join the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, when and if that ever becomes a thing.

So how long before Fox cans it and CW has to pick it up and place it on their schedule with Supergirl? 1 season, 2 seasons? Half a season?

Probably a better chance than if it were on CBS.

Bill Crudup to play movie Barry Allen's father. Bryan Singer confirms that Wolverine 3 will include the genetics obsessed Mister Sinister, which was kind of hinted at in X-Men: Apocalypse. Speaking of Greg Berlanti, he promises original musical numbers for the Supergirl / Flash crossover episode. Usually takes five or six seasons before a show resorts to a musical episode which seems like a bad sign, but at the same time I can't really remember a show that did resort to a musical episode that I didn't enjoy.

Just pointing out that it looks ridiculously low-res for a show in 2016.

Already making some moves, Ben Barnes reportedly to be a series regular to join Jon Bernthal Netflix's The Punisher. Rumor is he'll be Bobby Saint, who was a crime prodigy introduced in the 2004 Punisher movie and played by James Carpinello, who also portrays John Saint, who in turn is that movieverse's Jigsaw, one of the few Marvel villains you could attribute to Punisher. Interesting, but ultimately doesn't sound too likely to me since it's a character from another studio's movies, but at this point anything is possible.

Conrad Vernon has signed on to direct a remake of Troma Films' The Toxic Avenger. Truly one of the greatest bad movies of my generation, I totally don't want to see a reimagining of.

There were about twelve characters in Captain America: Civil War, and according to the Russos Avengers: Infinity War will have upwards to 60, and that they have some unexpected faces up their sleeves, some that might be from TV/Netflix. Also when discussing Brie Larson's casting as Carol Danvers, they remained coy on whether or not she'd be showing up. Her solo movie is supposed to be an origin story, so if she does even show up there's no telling if she'll just be an Air Force soldier with a line or two or if she'll be powered and her solo movie will be more flashback. New York ComiCon is in October, and the cast of Iron Fist will be in attendance, probably to not actually answer questions and to generally speak kindly about everything involved.

Some Justice League footage from ComiCon. Zack Snyder shares images of Batman's new tacticool outfit for Justice League. Looks kind of like a combination of Nite Owl's from Watchmen and the Nolan Batman costume. Not a fan of the weird googles, or the whole Extreme Paintball look, which is my biggest problem with Flash's costume. It's like they're going in the opposite direction. I do like it's less bulky, wasn't a particular fan of FatBat costume.

Fox has acquired the life rights of Stan Lee and are developing a period action-adventure movie set in the 1970s that is being described as a film in the “tone of Kingsman: The Secret Service or, as one insider put it, Roger Moore’s 007.” That ... that should be wild.

Extended season 4 preview clip for Agents of SHIELD. Still no real revelation on the whether Robbie is Inhuman or if he's supernatural, but talking with Mary Sue Poots doesn't really make me comfortable.
