I've been thinking about this for a while now. Why do some people play this game and never leave? Why do some come and go? Well I've done some soul searching and figured out why I love it here in my pretend wolrd.

1. It is the only vacation that I can afford.
2. I can live like a queen on my husband's gil.
3. I have made incredible friends whom I can count on.
4. Those same friends can't just drop by when my house is a total wreck.
5. I can raise the dead! Wow, can't do that in real life...
6. I can be who I really am, not the grown up I pretend to be IRL.

How about you? What keeps you coming back for more?

I think I have posted this before but my reasons (and the order of importance) are as follows:

1) Exciting adventures with friends - In RL scheduling events is impossible. Trying to get your friends together is very hard to do. In FFXI I do it almost every time I log on. It is great having a diverse range of people to play with also.
2) Immediate accomplishment - I almost never get this in RL. It's one thing this game provides a lot of almost all the time.
3) Magic - fantasy - entertainment. - Like you said, great vacation material.

-.-

I play because its fun, and I have something to do when I'm really bored (Like when I'm done my training and homework, and my friends are busy).

But Porksaladelite is right. The hot Mithra, Hume and sometimes Elvaan lsebian sex also has its greatness.

Break from reality, a reality filled with stupid people, asking stupid questions, like.. why is my mail not working, in which I answer... are you dialed up to the internet... phone goes silent.

As the above poster, I play because it's a nice, fun break from the hardships of reality, such as school, work (in which I am a dishwasher paid nothing but minimum wage ><;), etc.

Think of it as a stress ball, except less squishy, and nothing like a stress ball.

Like Argonaut, I live in a world full of stupid people (it takes a LOT of patience to be a computer tech). On the downside, it does affect me ingame and since I started this job, I am less inclinded to guide new players that don't want to understand why a mnk doesn't need HP+ earrings at lvl30......

I play the game to escape reality a bit. I've met some very nice people during my time on Vana'diel (you're one of them pink), and I like to log online and just have fun with them.

Some of the quest/missions thrown at us by SE are very challenging and you get a good feeling once you get to beat them (god damn Mammets). I WILL have my Rajas ring.

It's fun :)

I like to play FFXI for a relaxing getaway from reality sometimes, other times I just log in to see if any of the friends I have made along the way are on. This is by far one of the best games I have ever played. I really enjoy playing FFXI and it definately helps pass the time. There is even a rumor that I may be able to actually play from the dessert in Iraq, god I sure hope so. I am having Maggiep send me the discs just incase. I recently bought a lap top and it is on it's way to my pops house to be sent to me here WOO HOO!!! See you all soon I hope. GOOD LUCK to each of you.... KAE

I like the crafting aspect of this game and the player-driven economy. The various crafting guilds are well designed, have personality, and populated with detailed recipes. Even more so, the guilds are dependent on each other, it is not uncommon to find a large number of synthesis with three to four sub synthesis that require other crafting guilds to make.

Also, this is an international game. The world is populated by people from various countries. Interacting with them is certainly fun. There are many ways to satisfy the most achievement-driven players, so there is always something to do.

Moreover, the linkshell system is very innovative. Instead of restricting players to "sworn loyalties" (as other games do) to a specific player community, everyone is free to associate with different groups of people. This brings the server together, as people can freely switch between LSes to make HNM runs, fish with the fishing LS, or stay back at the regular LS to chat with friends.

I was browsing the forum as I often do and I came across this post. I have this convorsation weekly with my RL friends who play.

I first bought this game because it was a final fantasy title.

I soon realised that I made many connections with people within the game. I made friends with some of theese people IRL. The strange thing about this game is people don't have the defensive attitude that they might have had IRL.

I love this game because there is always something to do here.I can craft, quest, camp, party or I can just sit and BS. I think the flexabilty in this game is what I love so much.

I'm sure I will be one of the last people to play FFXI. This game just roxxxxxs that much.

It absoulity beats watching soap opras and eating bon bons.

I see myself playing this game forever.... It helps that my family plays it together. We don't even watch regualr T.V. anymore, which is proabaly a good thing. Maybe we're like the Cleavers of today, but instead of sitting around playing a game of Yahtzee or Monopoly, we're playing FFXI. It has given us so much quality time together, and a common ground for connecting. When one person plays the others watch and cheer them on. It really is fun.
I too love the international aspect of this game. I have friends all over the world, and occasionally we teach each other our different languages. I know that I never would have had access to their insight or friendships otherwise. My FFXI friends are a true gift in my life.
The only downside for me is end-game...I myself am not too fond of the end-game aspect. It is too competitive for my taste, and as a grown woman cannot fathom taking orders from LS leaders, who are young enough to be my children. LoL! But because there are so many other things to do, I don't have to play end-game. That's what makes FFXI so special.
I am glad people are enjoying this post. My family and I have been playing for nearly 2 years and anything that has been a part of my life for that long needed to be reflected upon.

I started playing to keep myself out of trouble.

I keep playing because I'm a glutton for punishment.

I'll stop playing if there's a 4th maintenance this freaking week.
