New proposed Legislation to regulate gamesFollow

Many of you probably already know about this, as it's been in the news and several web comics have addressed this in the past several days. Several Senators are planning on introducing "The Family Entertainment Protection Act" which will regulate the sale of certain video games in the US.

Here is a link to the Video Game Voters Network, which has some information, and you can also sign up and send an email to your State Senators addressing this issue. The system is automated, so once you fill in your information they have a form letter that is well written addressing the issue. All you have to do is hit the Send Email button and it will send one out to your Senators.

Here's a quote from the site:

Quote:
Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Joe Lieberman (D-CT), and Evan Bayh (D-IN) recently announced that they will introduce "The Family Entertainment Protection Act," which would regulate the sale of certain video games throughout the country.

In the past year, Michigan, Illinois, and California have all passed laws to ban the sale of certain video games to minors. So far, courts have blocked these laws from taking effect. But anti-video game forces are pressing forward. Gamers must stand up now and take action. Government does not regulate access to or the sale of movies, books or cable TV, and it should not regulate video games.

The computer and video game industry has a widely praised self-regulatory system including Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings, advertising and marketing restrictions, parental education, and console manufacturers are now introducing parental control features that will be available in the next generation consoles. Moreover, every major retailer has a policy to ask for ID before selling games to minors. The effect of legislation seeking to regulate games would stifle constitutionally-protected creativity in a medium that is at the cutting-edge of innovative entertainment.

Please take action now and tell your Senators not to co-sponsor or support "The Family Entertainment Protection Act."

Thanks for the heads up on this!

Sheese, don't these people have more important things to do than regulate video games?? My tax dollars at work! NOT.

I will say thank you for your concern, but I am a very capable parent and can regulate my kids entertainment myself. Please go mommy someone else! :P

Again thanks for posting this, my hubby is gonna have a fit over this, but he likes having a fit over anything political anyway!!

Which would be nice, but then maybe the game you play wouldn't be available if there are so many regulations in place that it doesn't make sense financially for a company to produce and market a game for mature players. I don't think this would affect games like WoW, as I think it's rated T. But many other worthwhile games, first person shooters, etc could be affected.

Also, this might take animated bewbs out of games. Think of the bewbs!!

As long as they don't ban acting like a 14-year-old in a video game, I should be alright...

Proof that I am indeed a right winger. Supporting palestine means the continuation of the need for U.S. military hardware in the middle east, which means the furthering of the military/industrial complex which means "Mo' Money! Mo' Money!" for me, a white, land owning pubbie scum.

Incidentally, I'd point out that Clinton & Co's proposal is silly except I'm not sure I can stand another one of Gbaji's "See? You disagree with a point from the Left so you're a fool for not voting Republican and supporting their positions!" diatribes.

Actually as time goes on there are more and more additions to the "mature" age bracket of gamers. It would probably make sense for publishers to market more games to the older generations and forsake their pre-pubescent, non-income gaining, obnoxious age bracket.

My grandad used to play the old SSI gold series games when they came out for the C64. He was in his 60's at the time. Those games weren't made for kids.

The Legend of Blacksilver ftw!

Not to mention the fact that once regulation is in the hands of the government, it's up to them to set the bar for what's appropriate. They might see all those textured polygonal gyrating female meshes in WoW and think it's inappropriate, then slap a mature rating on it. Future titles would have to then consider what type of content to include or exclude in order to avoid a rating that would eliminate a large demographic.

I'm not saying that games need dancing chicks (or guys) in order to sell copies, but it might not stop there. Who's to say they might find all the killing that happens in a majority of the games to warrant an adult rating? At that point the only games you'll see out there is chess and hello kitty world.

Well I understand your point, but frankly to me if it would eliminate the *** holes in game (and most of them are adults) I'd say yes. But it won't, and all it will do is give the government one more thing to be meddling into. And frankly you know they (politicians) don't play themselves, so why gang bang something they don't even do??

Anyway cnut 14 year olds hopefully can mature, most *** hole adults can't.

Go away, n00b. Barring that, don't post anymore until you have read enough to be able to respond to something that was quite obviously taken in the manner it was meant to be by EVERYONE ELSE WHO READ THE F'UCKING POST!

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. And [MOE] will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. Your point was neither salient or amusing. More people care than you would like to know.

Now, having covered the required comebacks, your homework assignment is to conduct an experiment of the conductivity of human flesh. I need a report, by tomorrow morning, detailing your findings on how the human body responds to the mass application of unimpeded current by way of immersion in a tub containing one plugged in hair dryer.

Whats to keep the parents from buying these games for their 14 year olds? Most parents dont pay attention even to what these games are. Do you think a sticker saying 17 and below is going to change that?
