Commas and GrammarFollow

#1 Mar 15 2006 at 5:37 PM Rating: Good
Like most Asylumites, I have a pet peeve with regards to grammar. More specifically, the blatant incorrect use of the comma in place of all other punctuation. I thought that this was an anomaly when I first saw it done by a woman on another forum. I have now seen it done yet again by what seems to be a girl in the OOT forum found here. What possesses these people to insert commas where there needn't be any and to replace periods with sometimes three consecutive commas? Is this a female only phenomenon? What school system teaches this?

Example:

hello, lol, I like this forum,,, this is a great place to meat people,,, do you lik FFXI, I do,, this, one time, in skool,, I did this essay, and, i got an F,,, I dont no why,,lol,,, c-ya!,,

The thread you link to isn't a very good example in my opinion. That's not really being too abusive with commas. I think the OP in that thread was inserting commas in the correct spots to emphasize where a pause in mental (or vocal) reading would and should occur.

Things that DO rub me the wrong way in that thread: spelling "without" as "witout", and this little gem in her sig "If u ever hear the voice of a night elf, have no worries, beacuse you are already dead." 'U' is a letter, not a substitute for "you", and does nothing else but signify that a lazy moron is sitting behind the keyboard. A spell check on "because" wouldn't have hurt either.

String.Replace("HI!,,,,LOL,,,I <3 FFXI,,,,LOL,,,,", ",", "")

This should help.

That'll be fifty bucks.

What irks me more is people using apostrophes to pluralize things. Smiley: banghead

I use the ellipses way to often. See I would have normally used it right there but since I was talking about it I caught myself. *refrains from using the ellipses*

EDIT:Spelling of the word "Ellipses" > me.

Ellipses. They're ellipses.

My guess is that the , and the . are right next to each other.

Dumbass.

Well it's not perfect, regex would be much slicker, but was in a hurry to post, so I made that up for now.

Man, Aegis, that hurt. I'm going to go eat another small child to soothe my wounds.

I've concluded that people use ellipses to try to hide the fact that they're not sure whether to use a comma or a period.

Psst. You're not fooling us.

People who use ellipses come across as uncertain, to me. "Well... it could be this... but it could be that... so, I dunno...."

Just remember that periods end things.

Like relationships.

An ellipses is three periods, so it that three relationships down the drain? Smiley: confused
