And now for your useless fact of the day..

Mardi Gras (French) translates directly to "Fat Tuesday".

This has been a useless public service announcement.

Close, but not quite.

It translates directly to "Tuesday fat"
They put most adjectives after nouns Smiley: wink2Smiley: tongue

Smiley: rolleyes When translating back to English you have to flip the adjective and noun for it to make sense. Silly nerd.

Example: Bonhomme de neige

Your theory: Man of snow
My translation: Snowman

Re-translation is fun!

Skip right to the third version if you've read it before.

forum=4 re-translated!

My favorite so far is "Kelvy, dining room of souls"

It is sometimes a bit quirky, so you might have to refresh a time or two to get it to load.

EDIT: Fixed link

As a denizen of Louisiana, I usually attend Mardi Gras, but not the parades in New Orleans, ever. Too crowded for me during the day, and I'm still a bit too young to go to Bourbon Street.

But, even this year I didn't attend as much, as I had waaaay to many projects for school to finish, as well as the fact that Fat Tuesday was my birthday. Yay 17. =D

Also, for more French-flipping fun, look at the capital, Baton Rouge, or "Red Stick", but directly says "Stick Red".

Jophed,

Why is it the nations responsibility?
When did I say it was? I never said that the government needed to do anything. I did say that you'll probably need some form of government intervention at some level (state, federal) if you want to spur redevelopment along at any sort of rapid pace. Which you will. Whether or not you care about the redevelopment is up to you. More accurately, it's up to the voters at large and how they feel about it and how much they make it an issue at the polls. It's a fair bet that if the representatives from New Orleans and Lousiana don't advocate for assistance, the voters will find new representatives who will.

I haven't mentioned politics at all in this thread except in the vaguest of terms -- that some sort of government assistance at some level will be needed if the city wants to do more than stare at blocks of condemned housing for the next couple of years.

As for the job creation, it seems my source of news actually found a job in a very short time making very good money mainly due to the massive influx of business since his company's competitors are shut down from a lack of labor. I'm sorry that your source was shut out by a bunch of unemployed Mexicans -- maybe he should get better at his trade Smiley: laugh

Is there fine print on those signing bonuses? Of course there is. Are comapny's loathe to part with their money? Well, duh. Are the Burger Kings and Holiday Inns in Chicago, New York, LA, DC, Seattle, Miami, St. Louis, Charlotte, Dallas or Lincoln, Nebraska offering $5k signing bonuses regardless of the fine print? Nope. Gee, I wonder why that is and what it says about the labor markets in those regions versus in New Orleans. If the unskilled labor market was truely flooded as you claim, economics would dictate that Burger King would be offering bare minimum wage and making you buy your own uniform and spatula.
