I was not at all happy with the customer service from Dell. It's not that the reps didn't know what they were talking about - one didn't, but the second did; so that's about average - but the company policy itself. I was assured that if we could identify the problem as being hardware related (which it was), a tech would come to my house and fix it or replace the motherboard.

Said tech never materialized, and follow up calls went nowhere. I ended up fixing the damned thing myself, although I was warned it would invalidate my warranty. I said, "That would be a pity, since it's been of so much use to me so far!" and hung up the phone.

Meh, the only reasons I bought a Dell were the sale price (eaten up by buying a new NIC) and the convenience (not so much). Back to doing it myself, I suppose.

I have been building my comps from scratch since I built my first supper-fast 66MHz. Smiley: grin I really don't see a point in buying an off-the-shelf system since I know what I'm doing. (Well maybe if I wanted a Media Center PC. I hear there are enough compatablity issues between hardware that its just a headache to build it yourself and have it work properly.)

It really seems that customer service anymore is just an after thought. Reps for the most part are poorly trained and just don't care. Granted I have gotten some really helpful people over the years, but they are usually the 3rd, 4th or even 5th person I end up contacting over the issue.

I hope you got the reps name and ID number, in case they don't follow through with cancelling the order. Keep an eye out for the charge on your credit card.

I dont mind working with people in india, its the ones that can hardley speak english (in one case, one who couldn't speak english at all, who wrang ME to do a survey, I'm sure they where using a "how to speak english" guide and had no idea what they where acctually saying")

But yes, Dell is good if you are planning to not upgrade. Generally, they are not very self-upgrade friendly, but good machines all around. Good luck with cancelling your order :)

My oldest just got a new dell and isn't happy over the fact it doesn't have enough open slots for her futher needs and she's stuck with onboard video.

I will never get an off the shelf system, as there is something about having a computer you have put together yourself. Up until last week, I always could do any work needed myself. Sometimes with guildmates answering any guestions I had.

If I had the right equipment I would have saved myself money and just order new power supply and motherboard and struggle with trying to get XP to deal with it.

Instead I've had fun all week talking with the guys who over how just changing the battery had ended up frying the motherboard and talk over what files I needed backed up. As we tried to work around problems caused by WinXP Pro, we also chatted about SF conventions we go to, people we both knew and were friends with and Battlestar Galaxica.

We're looking forward to chatting some more tomorrow when I go pick up the my baby, newly restored and working once again. Again laughing over how the last thing he had to fix was a bad battery on the new motherboard.

I'm also plan to take up his offer of copies of Battlestar Galaxica he has saved on his harddrive.

Now That is service that you're not going find from a call center in India or the USA.

General rule of thumb with video cards is to buy about 2 levels below the "cutting edge" new card/chipsets. The cost to performace ratio is much better. New cards typically have driver problems for the first 6-10 months they're on the market, and most applications take about that long to actually utilize the new features they have anyway.

Yeah, but you can't tell me that it wouldn't be neat to be on the cutting edge with all the pretty colors. Considering my current set-up... yeah, I wouldn't mind.
