Blink/Utsusemi Tanking - A thing of the Past?Follow

#1 Jun 30 2005 at 9:39 AM Rating: Decent
This is taken from the PlayOnline main page:
Quote:
*Changes to the ninjutsu "Utsusemi"
In the next update, the player's enmity will decrease when a shadow image created by Utsusemi is absorbed by an attack.

This seems to me that it will affect the effectiveness of Ninja's tanking, as they lose enmity - or I'm just interpreting it wrong.

What do you all think - and is this a good or a bad thing?

Also from the same post on PlayOnline:
Quote:
*Changes to Ranged Attacks
Soon, the distance of the monster from the player will determine the damage and accuracy of ranged attacks. This determination will vary from weapon to weapon, as will the ideal distance for maximum damage. In addition, the higher the monster's level is with regard to the player, the less damage will be dealt with a ranged attack. This system is similar to that of melee attacks, but the difference in damage will not be as great.

Archery buffs take note! Although it's not a major change, it WILL affect Rangers...It'll be interesting to see how big or major these changes will be.

Anybody interested in what the Ninjas are saying about this should check out all the threads on the Ninja Forums - I think there are 3 or 4 going on this topic right now.

It's very interesting to read the different opinions on this.

Personally I wanted to play Ninja when I first bought this game a year and a half ago - that sounded like the coolest job, "The ninja is a lightly armored master who can sneak through the enemy lines and inflict deadly damage through his use of throwing weapons and the sword. The ninja relies upon speed and stealth rather than armor and hit points." as it says at the top of the Ninja page. That's what I was looking for - not knowing the game.

After starting the game I realized that while Ninja is still a very cool job, I really wasn't wanting to play as a "Blink Tank." Don't get me wrong - I've been in some amazing parties where Ninja tanks totally rocked and we had some great chains and experience. However I still have this "purist" view that Ninja's are a sneaky DD - more like THF with their SATA - but I also know that's not the way things are (unless you sub thf, and even then it's not the same 'til later on) in FFXI and that's okay. That's the main reason I've only gotten to level 10 with Ninja. (I wanted to at least try out the Dual Wield ability) I will probably at least get to 15 so I can sub Nin during Ballista - as people say it's the ONLY way to go. LoL.

It will be interesting to see how these changes in the next update will REALLY affect gameplay - but it's also interesting to see people think about it way too much (sometimes Freaking out).

This may or may not be a popular opinion, but I'm glad it's being interpreted as a "nerf". I hate the sub evrything with NIN mentality that's been going on. Half the people playing as NIN sucked, so now it looks like it will take a little more skill to be effective.

Give someone skilled a good challenge, and they'll rise up to meet it. The results will only benefit those with skill.

I don't think this is going to hurt NIN/WAR's tanking one bit. It will make it easier for job combos like RNG/NIN though because it will allow the tank to get hate back easier. The RNG/NIN wouldn't normally be shedding hate by getting hit before the update. It won't hurt NIN/WAR's one bit because there is a TON of NIN gear with enmity. People may just have to sstart using it more. SE obviously loves blink tanks as deemonstrated by the fact that every new NIN item they add seems to have +enmity, also its something that sets ffxi apart from other games. I'm not aware of any other game with this style of tank.

There is probably a new +enmity job trait for NIN's coming out or maybe a lot more +enmity NIN gear and they want to make sure it gets used. Currently most NINs all use the same gears, this might just be to mix that up some.
