This principle appeals to real life Shykin, and it appeals to this game too.
There are some things that are necessary. An updated weapon is necessary. So is appropriate armor. Sometimes, food is necessary. Having all your spells, knowing how to play your job, and being a good team player all qualify.
But a ring that costs what, a million gil?
The people that can afford equipment like this are in the minority.
Every board will tell you that without it you're just not a good DRK/DRG/SAM/whatever. Eh, who has the kind of time it would take to farm a million gil, who has the patience to camp NMs to make that kind of money. A good player is determined by his playing, not by extraneous equipment that requires ridiculous amounts of play time to afford.
Plenty of people get to level 60+ without Sniper Rings ;)
It's like saying life isn't worth living unless you have a mansion in the hills and four cars. The amount of fun these people have in life probably corresponds to the amount of fun the people with Sniper rings have playing this game.
Maybe someone's idea of fun is standing in one place for hours on end waiting for some NM to spawn, or rounding up a bunch of greedy people for repeated shots at the same BCNM, or (god forbid) farming for about 82798273 years ;)
But it really is fun to go to some area you couldn't go to five levels ago and explore, or level up a job you haven't taken time to, or work on quests. As fame grows, the proceeds from quests can be quite nice ;)
Don't be discouraged by elitists. You don't NEED a sniper ring, any more than you need to have a mansion and 4 cars. Life's for living, games are for playing, might as well have some fun doing both.
Edit: phrasing things so they make sense is the biggest fun of all >< lol
