This really has no thoughtful bearing on the philosophy of the game. Nor, will it help you to pull off that Uberskillchain with the sorry n00b (no offense to the rookie players) in your pt... But it will give you a little giggle...unless you are a super hardass (and there are NONE of those here).

Both my wife (Rahanna) and I play this game. Most of the time our our son is up front with her and our daughter is in the back with me. I really gave no thought to their "learning" anything from FFXI at all. (Well, my wife did teach our daughter the "taru happy dance"... sad, but very amusing) That is, until the other day.
I had just come home from work and was sitting on the couch, dragging off those heavy steel toe boots, when my daughter comes up to me with ALL of her toys stuffed into a bag and carrying a kaliedescope(sp?) and informs me in a strudy way that: "I'm going to jeuno daddy!" It took me a second to register exactly what she had said, but then I started giggling. I then proceed to pick her up and toss her on the couch and "beat her up". After a whack or two with her wand (the aforementioned kaliedescope) I let her go and pretended to be dead. She pokes me (just like when I die in game) and announces: "I only had 1 hit point left! Daddy..." She also announces quite frequently now that she is a Taru white mage. So, she has earned the name, Cassytaru.

So, anyway, I hope that my litte story has amused you as much as it amused me... ^^

My four year old girl has her own character on my husband's account. It HAD to be a mithra, which she calls "lions". And it just HAD to be named Lion, however that name is either prohibited or someone had it. So I decided to spell it exactly the way she pronounces it: "Meyeon" (mm EYE on). She runs around beating up "bad guys". But not before asking them to have a tea party. (said request given while tapping CTRL+A, mind you) And every single time, she shouts 'That's not very NICE' when they hit her back. She's a goon =) And since my husband has quit the game (and let me sell off all his WHM's armor) the account is technically hers now and she's the only one that plays on it anymore. I told her I'd pay her in cookies if she'd go farming for me. Worked for a little while ^^ But she gets VERY irate when she has to "go to the hospital" and falls over.

She also plays City of Heroes but she's better at that game and doesn't die. *I* die alot in that game...but she doesn't /boggle.

Touching, both stories. Glad to see you don't discourage your daughters from video games.

I would never discourage my kids from playing. I think that the game, like many others, fosters a sense of imagination. Cassy also has the habit of calling people (when a bit peeved at them) Aguda (Yaguda)... I think I'd rather have her saying that than picking up MY language habits and calling them a f*ckbag or something equally disturbing... ^^

That's eerily adorable. My niece always liked to do the same when I was living with my sister, but since the only game I played at her house was American McGee's Alice.. I tended to, er.. discourage it, lest she realize that cats' heads do indeed explode when shot.

EDIT: However, she did like playing Toejam and Earl with me on XBox.. and sadly, she was better at it than I was. And she was three at the time. O_o;

That has to be one of the cutest things I've ever heard!^^ (both stories)

I know when I'm playing and my niece is around, she'll sit right beside me and stare, with her jaw wide open, at the screen. Then when I zone, she gets so upset because the screen goes black. But as soon as everything loads again, she laughs her little butt off and goes right back to staring at the screen (She's only 2 so she doesnt really grasp the whole game concept, she just loves the characters running around).
