An explosion in Irvington this morning leveled a three-story house, sparked fires in adjacent homes and left authorities scrambling to rescue people trapped in the rubble, authorities said.
The blast near 21st Street and 20th Avenue shook surrounding houses at 7:30 a.m. and left a strong odor of gas wafting though the neighborhood, authorities said.
"We've got a report of people trapped in the debris pile," said Irvington Deputy Fire Chief Charles Weiss.
Erica Holmes, 35, lives on Ellis Avenue, near 20th Avenue, and said the blast shattered several windows in her home.
"It sounded like something crashed into the house. It shook the whole house," she said.
