Starting comp programing for halfwits (me)

This is my first time on the ot forum so go easy please. The thing is I am interested in learning about computer programming but I have absoluly NO starting knowledge whatsoever. Can someone point me in the right direction in regards to books/programmes and what language is best. Thanks.

I dunno, you could try this.

Are you in high school, or college? Obviously they should have courses available. If not, you can take night courses at a local community college.

Otherwise, download some basic compiler, like "Basic." Its syntax is pretty obvious, and will introduce you to standard programming features like if/then statements. When you get bored of it (which you will, quickly) move up to something more complex, like C++.

Get a cheap $100 computer and install Linux on it. Use the excellent free programming tools for Linux and buy a book. I'd start with c++ it's not very complex really. Learning SQL is probably a good idea as well. It depends greatly on what you want to do with the knowledge at the end of the day.
