Since somone posted about Poe... I feel the need to celebrate one of my favorite poetesses... mz. Plath.. here's one of my favorites.. please let me know waht you think...
Firesong
Born green we were
to this flawed garden,
but in speckled thickets, warted as a toad,
spitefully skulks our warden,
fixing his snare
which hauls down buck, ****, trout, till all most fair
is tricked to faulter in split blood.
Now our whole task's to hack
some angel-shape worth wearing
from his crabbed midden where all's wrought so awry
that no straight inquiring
could unlock
shrewd catch silting our each bright act back
to unmade mud cloaked by sour sky.
Sweet salts warped stem
of weeds we tackle towards way's rank ending;
scorched by red sun
we heft globed flint, racked in veins' barbed bindings;
brave love, dream
not of staunching such strict flame, but come,
lean to my wound; burn on, burn on.

I somehow doubt you're going to find a whole lot of support for poetry corner on these boards 
But, with that said, I've long been an admirer of Sara Teasdale and own a nice collection of her works. Except for her very first published volume (which I've all but given up on), I own first edition copies of each of her works, most of them signed and numbered. Someday I'll need to get my collection appraised. Her best known poem is probably "There Will Come Soft Rains".
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;
Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone

Sylvia Plath is my favorite psychotic suicide victim who was in Love with Ted Hughes.
Aside from that, she's basically an Emily ********* rip off artist. If she hadn't offed herslef you wouldn't even know her name.
Whitman is the only great American poet. All the others, Frost, Hughes (langston, not Ted) are really pretty marginal when compared to the likes of Elliot and Yeats.
Just my oppinion, naturally.

I'd toss in Ezra Pound and T.S.Eliot (was that the Eliot you meant?) as great American poets. I'd list Allen Ginsberg, too, even if he only wrote the one poem.
I've always liked Anne Sexton and Delmore Schwartz, too, mainly because they did the tragic flameout thing with such dedication and style. Schwartz in particular showed amazing early promise, never realized.

WEll.. I still Love her work... Yes, I could compare her to ************ but ********* does not have her dark flare.
She is like Emily ********* on acid... If Emily did some Acid.. maybe I wouldn't be such a Plath fan.... although I DO love Emily so..
Don't forget to mention Hallmark (don't know his first name). He continues to crank out words that stir the heart:
