Trouble starting the game (was forum=10)Follow

A friend of mine is having some trouble starting FFXI. He hasn't played in a while, so he did a fresh install on his computer and started up POL, downloaded the new patch and started the game, but it just shuts down right away. He's using the same hardware now as last time, so I don't think it could be a hardware program. Does anyone recognise this problem?

Starts POL - Works fine
Activates ID - Works fine
Downloads patch - Works fine
Tries to start FFXI - FFXI window opens briefly then shuts down immediately

Sounds like his Video Card doesn't support FFXI, but You're sure that hasn't changed? Could try downloading the newest drivers.

I had this same problem after reformatting my hard drive and doing a reinstall. Downloading the latest version of DirectX fixed my problem.

Hope it helps.

Nope, he did that as well. We've done all the basic stuff. Checked settings, ran the POL file checker, turned off dual screen, reboot, reinstall etc.

I used to have similar problem, but it didn't just shutdown the game, it shutdown my computer as well.
Turned out that one of my RAM was broken.

Your case seems very weird, since the hardware are all the same...

Sorry, can't help much.

The FFXI engine has been upgraded in the last few years. Cards that would once run the game now won't in some cases. Can you post his system specifications for us?
