I have 2 external hd's a usb mous and a usb printer, but I only have 2 slots on my computers. Is that what a usb hub is for? To let me use more things with less slots? or is it a network thing? If so, is there a way to use all my things at once?

Yes, a USB hub allows you to connect several other things to your PC. ie webcam etc..
Surprised you only have 2 USB ports on your PC though? You should have 2 at the back and possibly 2 in front or on the side if your case new enough.
