Losing Connection during FFXI PlayFollow

#1 May 16 2006 at 3:30 PM Rating: Decent
I have three computers hooked up through a D-Link DI-624 router to connect to the internet. Now all three computers play FFXI Online. Just recently we've been having problems where out of nowhere, we get a Recieving of 0, which eventually boots us out of FFXI. When we try to log in right afterwards, were okay for a few moments until we get the red dot of death (Connection Loss) and lose connection from the game despite being able to talk to others during this period. After we log back in the third time, game play is normal until we get the problem again later on (time varies).

It seems to only happen during FFXI play (Not all three computers have to be on FFXI to get the problem, the non-playing ones lose connection to the net for a short time also. Though it always happens when one or more computers are connected to FFXI.

I asked SE about this, and they asked to open ports through my Router to see if that does anything. Problem is, to my limited (Read: Barely any) knowledge on Routers, you can only open one port to one computer. So since I have three, I'm unsure how I should proceed opening ports.

I'm hoping this is just an open port question, but that seems unlikely to me as this problem has just been happening recently. I'd imagine it could be a broken router also, but I have no clue how I could find out about that.

Any and all help will be grateful.

Thank you in advance,
One Annoyed Gamer

Opening ports means in the router hardware itself. It has nothing to do with ports to the computer. In the FFXI sticky above I believe it lists which ports need to be opened. You have to get into your router setup homepage which is usually accessed by typing 192.168.1.1 or some such into your browser. The exact address will be in your routers information guide. Keep in mind I'm using a Belkin, but they should at least be similar. Under firewall, application gateways, there should be a either list of ports, or where you can fill in the beginning and ending ports needed, and the type whether TCP or UDP. Once there the FAQ above should be able to help you out.

Thank you for the quick reply. I checked over the router section of the FAQ here, and found the ports needed to open. I'm pretty sure I can put that into the router through the 192.yadaya. The question is though, I have three computers, all three play FFXI online. Do I put some ports for one computer, then some others for the second, and then the rest on the third?

From what I've read, I can only open one port for one computer, not all three. This is where I need the most help, assuming this of course is the cause of my connection problems.

Again thanks in advance to any and all helpers.

Once you open the ports in the router, they should be open for all three computers.

You could also try enabling UPnP instead of messing with specific ports.

I wasn't aware you could do that (open ports for all comps). When I go to try that it asks for a private IP address, what would I put for that if I want to open those ports for all three computers?

UPnP? You'll have to forgive my lack of knowledge on this, what does this do? Any bad side effects or what not? Will I look more sexy to the ladies? ^^

FFXI doesn't need UPnP, it needs ports in TCP and UDP.

Make sure the following ports are open on your router/firewall:
-TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535
-UDP 50000 - 65535

These are what you need to be sure you don't have blocked.

A great site to learn about routers:
http://portforward.com/default.htm

I suggested UPnP because sometimes it is easy as clicking a checkbox. UPnP is a protocol that is supposed to make networking easy and configuration free. It handles, among other things, opening TCP and UDP ports when the connection request originates in the local side of the network.
