Graphics card for FFXIFollow

#1 Mar 21 2006 at 10:51 AM Rating: Decent
I am going to purchase an HP a1320 computer:
- Intel® Pentium®4 processor 524 with HT Technology; 3.06GHz
- 1.0GB DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM memory
- ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics with up to 256MB shared video memory
- 200GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA hard drive

Will this graphics card work for FFXI? I do not see it listed on Playonline's Recommended Requirements page, so it worries me. The computer DOES come with a PCI Express slot, so I can get a better graphics card if necessary, but I'm a little nervous about installing one myself since I've never opened a computer before...If the integrated graphics card is no good, are there any recommendations for a decent graphics card that will play FFXI (not necessarily at max settings...)? I don't want to spend too much since the computer is costing $620. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

FFXI doesn't need much to run, but even so you should get a real video card. Not only are x800s pretty affordable at this point, the rest of the system would be sort of going to waste with integrated graphics.

It seems, from reading these forums regularly, that ATI cards have less issues even though ffxi is officially partnered with nVidia. And don't worry about installation of a video card, it's pretty hard to ***** up.

When you get it installed be sure to disable the onboard video in the BIOS, unless you want to use two monitors.

Question..Is that HP computer a laptop.

If the answer is no, you better have an AGP slot.

If the answer is yes..You may or may not have some problems with FFXI.

edit:
*puts on the dunce cap*
Pci-express system. Not AGP.

No, not with a hard drive meeting those specs.

Why?

Huh? I don't understand, what's the reasoning behind that?

I think he was saying that if it is, indeed, a laptop, the poster might have issues running FFXI.

Oh I see.

I mean seriously, it would have taken 1 minute to go and google the model name on the machine...

Actually I've already seen notebooks with an internal serial ATA hard drive.

To upgrade. But the system is pci-express, which slipped my mind when thinking of video upgrades. I'm still on AGP myself.

Numorous posts in FFXI main with both ati and geforce chipsets for video on laptops, having a varity of problems, usually right after a patch to the game which does soemthing the driver the poster had did not liek, but I recall one onbaord video was scred in a severe way no matter whatr driver the poster tried. I say if hassle can be avoided, avoid it, instead of spending hours fixing it.

Yes how horrible of me >.>

Overreacting a bit ain't'cha?

You could have looked up what was wrong with onboard video/laptops with FXI just as easily.

Oh god here we go...

Aside from not researching what you were talking about elf your post made absolutely no sense to me and I've been working in this industry for nearly 5 years now. If your series of logic has baffled me, how the hell is someone else supposed to understand what you're driving at?

You won't find any 200GB drives in laptops. Period. SATA or not, they DON'T EXIST. If you're not sure about someone's machine then go and look it up, it's not hard.

The video adapters you'll find the major problems with are the intel onboard solutions, some people resort to having a software emulator. The majority of decent ATI and NVidia solutions appear to work well with FFXI, more power to you if you find a card with dedicated RAM. To be perfectly honest I haven't seen a whole lot of threads with people having issues with their laptop cards. Have you got some links to these that you'd like to show me?

You are going to have isolated issues with every game on the market with some cards. It's just the way it is, go out and buy somehting new, chances are it'll run better on newer graphics drivers. It's not restricted to FFXI.

It's kinda like saying, "Well if you buy that car you might come across the problem of having a flat battery sometime in the future". "Or you might even need to replace the tyres once every now and again".

We could have you know, not gone. Cheer up there emokid. Nobody forced you to be an offensive a-hole over a trivial matter. Let it go.

Yes from now on I must research every damn thing before askinga question, know every factor and aspect of every device in a system, and google up the specs of every model number of everything before I even think of saying anything, because that might **** off blowfin. Gotcha.

I've been in it for 12, not that that has anything to do with any of this.

What series of logic? WTF are you even "driving at"?

I asked a question instead of bothing to go search it up. Both get the same info, one doesn't make me do the work. Big freakin deal. What ever happened to "no harm in asking"? And its generally true that onboard video SUCKS.

*claps*
I Didn't say 200gb.
Further more I don't have to go look up ****, why are you making a big deal over asking the OP? Your turning a mole hill into a mountain, and trying to march of to war over it.

And? Don't recall saying otherwise. Just the onboard ones that had problems. Cards have soem mior driver issues now and again, no big deal, onboard ones have issues nearly every patch to teh game.

As you are fond of telling me, this can easily be looked up.
Practice what you preech.

*passes out after reading retarded bad analogy*

Heres a better one:

"If you buy a car with those bad* firestone tires, you better replace the tires before making any long trips."

*those got recalled later, but people were calling the brand bad before the recall, because of all the blowouts. If someone is reading this and thinking of doing the assinine retarded response of acting like I said a video card is being recalled so help me god I will find where you live and walk up and slap you for being stupid like that.

Now please, if you have anything you'de like to say to the OP to help him/her, do so. Leave me alone, flaming in tech support is waste of everyones time.

Edit: correctected text. Correction is bolded.

......Awe hell..
Wasn't going to bother but since I'm editing here anyway:

Woot. Now i'm an EMO kid, where's my rusty blade? (no offense intended to anyone out there with a serious problem)

Really all I was trying to do is say that your original response didn't make much sense, coming from someone who knows computers pretty well. Maybe you should listen to what peope are saying occasionally rather than trying to pick apart every sentance someone writes and taking it as a flame?

In summary though;

I Did say 200gb.

No you didn't, you wrote SATA, lay off the bongs.

No, when you bring up an argument and you state something as fact provide the fucking evidence. It's not up to the person who questions you to go out and do your work for you. There's a vast difference between thinking you are correct and actually knowing what you are talking about.

Anyway, rateups for highfrequency lol. I have real work to do...

EDIT: At least we've provided some entertainment for Wint. =)

I typo. A lot.
Was suppossed to say "didn't say" because you said:

...I could say more here, but I really don't want more fuel on your fire.

Mmm no, you were just generally ******** about me asking and not looking up.

Quote:

Translation: I don't have to be held to my standard of looking crap up, just everyone else. And while I'm saying you have to I'm going to try and distract anyone that may come acoss this thread I keep bumping for no good reason so they don't notice this double standard, by throwing around the words "fact" and "evidense" and hope they arent on one of the board down video chips that won't play FFXI.

Quote:

Now that is amusing. I asked a question.

Your wasting peoples time and breaking swear filters.

LMAO

All I even stated was the mobile onboard ati and geforce cards have plenty of complaints from FFXI users and thats pretty easy to varify, in fact I'm shocked if you genuinely have not heard of this already, and I stated that onbaord is generally weak to start with, if you want performance you better be able to upgrade, I just said shorter "onboard sucks". It does. Don't even argue it doesn't. Don't even give me that facts BS. Onboard SUCKS.

For the record, you can get an alienware M7700 chasis with dual 160GB 7400rpm SATA drives in a raid 0 array, which effectivly registers as a single drive well over 200gb. The true single platter 200gb drives will be out in the next three months. That's besides the point however. There will be no flameing of people in MY tech support forum. If you ahve something to bring to the topic at hand, please do so. if you disagree with something someone else said, do so in a respectful manner. You want to flame eachother? Fine, but take it somewhere else. I DO NOT want any contributers who might have something useful to add to a discussion in here driven away because of that.

Thank you.

Kaolin the vast majority of tech answers regarding FFXI are taken care of in the main FFXI forum anyway. Their questions get answered about 10 times faster and they usually get a variety of opinions from people. This forum is very very dead most of the time, people aren't encouraged to post becuase of the reasons i've mentioned. Folks aren't encouraged to help as there's generally no positive return through the karma system. This forum is a graveyard and has been for quite some time.

I really do enjoy helping others out in here but what really gets me is when people post something which makes little sense, such was the case here. If someone trys to bite my head off when i query their post, well you've seen what happens. And besides when i call someone a bong smoking hippy, it's usually in jest ^^.

And yes, I was talking about single disk systems by the way.
