Ok, so I want to make a website. So I get a book on HTML right? I learn the basics, cool. Then I find out all these other codes I should know as well.

What I'm wondering is, to make a good website, do I need to know all that's listed in my title? Is HTML good enough?

What's the diff between HTML and XHTML and XML? Totally different ball game?

What would you guys with more experience on this; what code would you suggest to know on making a good site?

I appreicate any comments you can add to help me out!

XHTML is just HTML with a few changes, such as conventions to keep tags in all lower case, and other things to make it more readable and current (not having to support depracated tags).

XML is a totally different ballgame. It's a format for defining formatting on data so that various applications can present the same information however they think is attractive. imo it's the only viable option for making information in a database portable.

Check out http://www.w3schools.com for great info and examples of all kinds of web technology.
