I don't get math. "What is the probability of my second child being a boy, if I tell you that my first child is a boy?" The trick is that you'd guess 50% (ignoring genetic anomalies), but it's apparently 1/3. The idea behind it is that you write up the possible combinations:
Wait, what?

Shouldn't it be 50%, they're two independent events? The outcome of one shouldn't chance the odds of the 2nd one happening. Smiley: dubious

Now if you were saying what's my chance of having 2 boys, that's different...

Math. Smiley: oyvey

it is 50 / 50

some one is confusing probability of unrelated events with the odds of linked events

they are being morons while trying to explain some variant of the Monty Hall problem.

math should not be practice by those who do not can not understand when to apply its powers

You wear the same blue jeans and whatever shirt happens to be on top of the pile 95% of the time.

I guess I have a couple of pairs of dress shoes that get worn once a year if I'm lucky. There's a pair of decent running shoes and a pair of flip flops that see some action, but that's about all I can claim.

Depens on what sort of shoe you're buying. Sneakers then yeah it is but for high end fashion it's more or less to be expected because handmade, limited production etc.

For high quality dress boots or shoes you're starting at around €200 or so and if you look at custom made shoes then that €400 is probably in need of another zero.

The pfoblem woth the sneakers for me is that you don't find the models I like outside of the fancy designer brands. Even sneakers like Rick Owens Geobaskets don't have a cheaper alternative (and they're €750ish). Other more out there designs like say Damir Doma Falco's are never going to be found for less than the €600+ pricetag they have unless they go on sale which is fairly unlikely.

But you still need some boots for winter, some summer shoes (sneakers, loafers, boat shoes depending on your style) you can wear with shorts, some fancy dress shoes for under suits or two pairs in different colours if you wear a suit to work daily since those shoes shouldn't be worn 2 days in a row. Then maybe a pair of CDB's since they're a cheap versatile and durable shoe for casual wear.

Eh, $20 seems like a horrifyingly high amount to pay for a single bottle of beer, $500 seems like a horrifyingly high amount to pay for dinner at a restaurant, $2000 seems like a horrifyingly high amount for a PC, $1.6 million seems like a horrifyingly high amount to pay for a car etc.

The people buying those $500-1000 sneakers are into fashion and willing to pay for something special, it's a hobby and not just things you need to not be naked just like beer is a hobby for you and me and not just something you drink to get drunk. If you just want something between your feet and the pavement, $100-250 will get you a good pair of whatever sort you prefer (or $50 in case of sneakers, Vans Authentic are pretty great) but if you want something really special you'll have to pay for it.

Oh, I'm not saying that there aren't shoes that are that expensive, I'm just saying they're a waste of money.

What's a CDB?

I have something that looks like a cross between a hiking boot and a sneaker. They're waterproof enough for the winter and have good tread on the bottom, they work well enough with shorts and general casual stuff for them not to look out of place or anything.

To you, yes. But my point was that that isn't so to others and that you probably spend money on things that others consider a waste. It's all relative to your interests.

I really need to buy a lot of clothing. I went down pants sizes and shirt sizes to the point where I currently only own like 5-7 non-casual shirts (thankfully, half of which are white). And like 2 pairs of jeans.

But the thing about needing a lot of clothing at once is that you see the costs all added up, and it hurts, it hurts bad.

Uniqlo, Uniqlo is cheap, simple and decent to high quality. Levi's are also cheap (in the US anyway) and a solid option for good jeans as long as you buy a well fitting pair without any of the pre distressed nonsense. I think Dockers make some reasonably affordable chinos so you can change things up from jeans.

I recently found a jean brand urban star at costco that I find fits really well, and looks great. can't argue with $15 either.

I've been pretty picky with jeans, as I find a lot of brands don't fit me, so when I find one that is comfortable I stick with it, regardless of price. It was nice to move from my old brand ($40) to these though.

I think it's not always a bad thing to waste money if you have the capacity, I certainly have my own things where I buy something for more than it's probably worth, but I still know that the return on the extra money is marginal at best.

I like it, although I don't like the current trend of suits being slightly too small so the bottom pulls out when you button up.

You're a scientist, you should understand charts. Especially ones as uncomplicated as this as it's basically just a way of showing which colour suit goes with which colour shoes, how formal certain shoes are and where you can wear each colour of suit.

The parts about "combos tagged with the fashion-forward tag are NOT indicated for beginners and can be seen as a fashion faux pas." and "pay attention to what other people around you are wearing and dress appropriately" are disturbing at best.

How? A black suit with anything other than black shoes is generally considered to look bad as are black shoes with light or brown suits so you have to really know what you're doing to make that look good. And paying attention to what others are wearing is obvious, some environments are very formal and conservative (government, army, lawyers, black tie events etc) and you'd look out of place with a less formal suit while others are much more free and showing up in a black suit with black whole cut oxfords would make you look like an idiot.

Just strikes me as a bit odd. It feels like I'm a 10 year old girl in a 1960's etiquette class or something. But this is all coming from someone who's never been fashion conscious on any level, so should probably take it all with a grain of salt.

Edit: Also, I haven't been to anything I've needed to wear anything more than casual clothes to since my wedding. Even conferences are pretty casual, you see a good number of people with jeans, and scientists aren't really known for their fashion sense anyway.

If anything, scientists are known for being terrible dressers in every possible way. I think it's because scientists in general are not very visual people and their brains tend to be more occupied with math and how to rid the world of cancer and stuff like that.

There's also the practicality > aesthetics thing with scientists, take the shoes you described above somewhere which I assume are along these lines. Very practical, durable, great for hiking and really shouldn't be worn for anything beyond that but it's like they're part of the scientist uniform. It also results in not wanting to spend any more money on clothes than what's strictly needed which doesn't help looks either.

Edit: Also for the David Mitchell video: his tux doesn't look unusually smart as his jacket is way too long and his trousers are size basketballer, they are too wide and at least 4-6 inches too long, maybe more. It makes him look like a very small man with very short legs or a boy wearing his father's suit.
