Here's an example of something I do nonstop, all the time, that is made stupidly more difficult in Windows 8 - searching.
Right now I have netflix on the right side of my screen and my browser open on the left. I typically have two windows open at a time. Email, articles, etc. There's generally little need outside of games (or dedicated video watching) for anything to take my entire screen.
So the search feature on 7 is particularly nice. It melds with my needs perfectly. Windows key, type search parameters, select what I need, and all without having to sacrifice my access to information. I'm still reading my email, or article, or watching my show, etc. My experience goes unbroken.
With Windows 8, however, I have to now stare at a blank screen. I can search the same way, but instead of the search just being a small section on the left side of my screen, it's forcing a break in my experience. ALL I get to look at is my search and search results. That's really annoying when you use the feature a lot. And it's a stupid change.
And then, if I don't see what I want, I can't just click back to whatever field I want my cursor in. No, I have to manually exit the metro screen first.
Meanwhile, there's literally nothing the metro screen is offering me that the old start menu wasn't doing just as well for my needs. It presented my programs in a tight, controlled manner, and let me access them without taking my entire screen for no reason.
Doing pretty much anything in Windows 8 feels like that. There are plenty of additions that are nice and worthwhile, but the interface is stupid. It makes sense when space is at a premium on tablet screens, but it's RIDICULOUSLY stupid for a mid- or large-sized screen.
Windows 8 isn't hard to use. It's just obnoxious to use. It's just not pleasant at the user experience level.
