It's not particularly difficult to get W7 for free. It might take you a bit extra time to get it working but that's worth saving $100 for in my opinion and the amount of monitors for sale around the $100-125 pricemark is crazy so there's bound to be a couple pretty good ones in there, assuming you're fine with 20-24".

windows 8 is really good, there's no reason to loath it. Making silly decisions about hiding the start menu, and metro, doesn't mean the operating system is terrible. To say you loath it doesn't even make sense. How on earth can you muster so much energy over something to trivial?

Because every time I use it I want to slam my head into a wall repeatedly. The interface and controls for it are just terrible.

I don't care about change when change is good. But Windows 8 is not a step up in design. I'm sure there are plenty of good ideas there. I'll enjoy them in Windows 9.

There are so many people who dislike W8 that it's not something incidental, it's just not a good version of windows purely because of that. The performance of W8 is meaningless compared to the UI and the change is so big that people have to relearn the OS entirely and it's nowhere near as intuitive as earlier windows or OSX.

Here's an example of something I do nonstop, all the time, that is made stupidly more difficult in Windows 8 - searching.

Right now I have netflix on the right side of my screen and my browser open on the left. I typically have two windows open at a time. Email, articles, etc. There's generally little need outside of games (or dedicated video watching) for anything to take my entire screen.

So the search feature on 7 is particularly nice. It melds with my needs perfectly. Windows key, type search parameters, select what I need, and all without having to sacrifice my access to information. I'm still reading my email, or article, or watching my show, etc. My experience goes unbroken.

With Windows 8, however, I have to now stare at a blank screen. I can search the same way, but instead of the search just being a small section on the left side of my screen, it's forcing a break in my experience. ALL I get to look at is my search and search results. That's really annoying when you use the feature a lot. And it's a stupid change.

And then, if I don't see what I want, I can't just click back to whatever field I want my cursor in. No, I have to manually exit the metro screen first.

Meanwhile, there's literally nothing the metro screen is offering me that the old start menu wasn't doing just as well for my needs. It presented my programs in a tight, controlled manner, and let me access them without taking my entire screen for no reason.

Doing pretty much anything in Windows 8 feels like that. There are plenty of additions that are nice and worthwhile, but the interface is stupid. It makes sense when space is at a premium on tablet screens, but it's RIDICULOUSLY stupid for a mid- or large-sized screen.

Windows 8 isn't hard to use. It's just obnoxious to use. It's just not pleasant at the user experience level.

I got Win 8.1, and then I got Classic Shell right away. Literally the first thing I installed after the OS.

Tablet interface on a PC is just silly. Do not want.

I could get Windows 8 for free through my university - I think it says something that most students instead opt for Windows 7 over it, even though 7 has a small fee.

Borderlands 1 had a talking sniper rifle. Not particularly polite either.

I don't think anything in the world of Borderlands is polite.

I really liked how in the bloodshot fortress some dude yells that he's going to strangle you with your own intestines and the AI lady goes "Ew. Dude, gross!"

Well yeah, but I don't think if I designed a rifle it wouldn't mock you for missing.

...

Yeah, okay, if I did it totally would. But I'm not a professional gunsmith trying to make a living.

And it's snowing.

It's warmer here, but still not feeling like spring. It's melted enough that everything is now covered in ice rather than snow.

So Benadryl isn't terrible at reducing anxiety.

Problem is, I'm also a walking zombie now.

I don't get math. "What is the probability of my second child being a boy, if I tell you that my first child is a boy?" The trick is that you'd guess 50% (ignoring genetic anomalies), but it's apparently 1/3. The idea behind it is that you write up the possible combinations:

Boy-Boy
Boy-Girl
Girl-Boy
Girl-Girl

You strike Girl-Girl, because one was a boy, leaving three remaining options, and only one of those three is the possible outcome:

Boy-Boy 1/3
Boy-Girl 1/3
Girl-Boy 1/3
Girl-Girl

= 1/3

However! Girl-Boy and Boy-Girl is the same combination. The only way it would not be the same combination is if the order of the gender plays a role, as in [first child]-[second child]. But if this is the case then Girl-Boy should be struck along with Girl-Girl, seeing as the first child was a boy.

Boy-Boy 1/2
Boy-Girl 1/2
Girl-Boy
Girl-Girl

= 1/2 = 50%

I don't get how Girl-Boy and Boy-Girl can be two different combinations if the order of the genders doesn't matter. How is one apple and one pear not the same as one pear and one apple?

Sounds more like a logic question than a math question.

Wait, what?

Shouldn't it be 50%, they're two independent events? The outcome of one shouldn't chance the odds of the 2nd one happening. Smiley: dubious

Now if you were saying what's my chance of having 2 boys, that's different...

Math. Smiley: oyvey
