That's just not cool, man.

At least share it.

It was way fun, I'll have to try and do it more often. Though I'm not used to fighting for my spot on the meter with a Disco priest. Smiley: lol

In my defense the Mrs. was cleaning the frig the other day. She told me the bottle had been in there since December, and that she wanted me to finish it off, or she was going to throw it out.

Always being willing to help out around the house, I obliged.

downloading the whole game sucks...downloading at 500kb/s makes it a little more bearable...dreading the patches though...

1) Some random level 30ish druid named "Diurd" in Thunder Bluff yesterday started to randomly insult me. I proceeded to tell him that he needed to learn to spell because it's durid, and he started becoming all emo because his name was druid backwards and witty and awesome. I proceeded to troll him until I disconnected. His priest friend seemed rather confused by it all, as well.

2) Kali got dragged along for a raid! So I was invited to Naxx10 (I know, rite) for the weekly, and then told I had to go Shadow (OH GOD!). My shadow UI wasn't even set up, it ended up displaying the other SP's DoT's. I forgot to change into my DPS gear. Utter chaos! 2.3k DPS. Couldn't have been more catastrophic. And I really don't want to DPS on this character. Ugh.

3) It's early in the morning. =_="

Kali, you're probably the only Shadow Priest out there who gets asked to go Shadow so much and hates it. I swear, if I were to create a Shadow Priest, I'd be forced to heal everywhere.

Also, went a-browsing on the Oboards and apparently the general belief is that Blizzard, in their latest patch, requires certain new ports to be opened to play. Something they gracefully forgot to mention. Now I just need to find out what ports are now required so I can clock in again.

This is the second unintentional cold turkey in barely a month. I'm starting to get cranky.

I wouldn't mind so much if I were better prepared. As it is, my shadow gear is better than my healing gear anyhow (apart from the fact that I do wear healing T9 even in my shadow gear and am therefore missing out on the set bonus, and ideal gemming for Shadow), and I've raided as Shadow before. I just hadn't set up my UI - that is fixed now, just need to spend an hour or two with the training dummies to get used to the setup I've got now. And I was in a healing mindset (really!) and it was all so hectic and unexpected and I do not like underperforming that badly. I do need a minute or two to remember the intricacies of DPSing that healing really doesn't have.
I feel that I would have squeezed out another 500 DPS or more if I had been prepared for that in any way. I was all like WHEEE RAID OH SHI- I'M DPSING WHERE ARE MY BUTTONS!! and that is just the perfect setup for really bad performance. I am pretty sure I'd have been fine healing even if that was my first raid (lolraid) in about two years or so.
It's all Delinja's fault. He made me do it.

Also, missing you. I want to run heroics with you. :P

Yeah, I miss dying in heroics as well.

Anyway, I should be able to get on once I get back home. Assuming the new ports were the reason for my inability to log on.

It wasn't even a guild raid. It was just Deli, me, and 8 randoms.

Also, protein person (what should I call you), you there? A lad I met earlier today who is studying computational science up in Scotland mentioned something about a "fold your own proteins" website, so I asked the almighty Google and it came up with this. Is that the thing he was talking about, and is it actually good (functioning, correct, useful, full of delicious hydrogen bonds, whatever)?
Also2, you're one of the people who don't hate on organic, right? Right?

Also3, OMG 6 days till Aethien.

We went back to ToC last night to do the weekly, and decided to finish it off since we were there. Before twins we did the usual: "does everyone know this fight" check.

Me: Anyone need a refresher on this one?
Boomkin: You just make sure you're damaging the opposite one, and change when DBM says ya?
Hunter: Ya that's kinda the gist of it.
Me: <Performs ready check>
<Everyone is Ready>
Tank: pulling!
Priest: Wow, I wish I understood the auras that well, I never know what to do...

So the priest died 3 times (go go battle rez...), and I got to rock the healing meters. Long story sort, we've still never wiped on that fight. Smiley: nod

Protein works. Smiley: lol

Um ya, I can only what the guy was talking about, but ya the site certainly fits the description. I'd heard about the project in the past (but never heard anything about if it's been helpful with the science). Predicting how proteins will fold is one of those things that seems to take enormous amounts of computing power, and doesn't work so well yet. The idea that people could do a better job isn't far-fetched at all. Fortunately this is more my field, so I can leave that protein folding stuff to others. Smiley: wink

Loved Organic; hated quantitative analysis. Doing (or I guess not doing) calculus at 8:00am almost cost me my minor...

Mhh, working with those people who do the protein folding stuff was one of the best experiences of my life. It's what got me decided on the whole computational science deal. I don't know. I think some proteins are not that interesting. I like neurotransmitter-related stuff and while some folding certainly needs to be done to be able to predict receptor affinities, the predicting of the receptor affinities is much cooler. Also, biodegradation of some random man-made polymers that have caught my fancy. I don't even know where I'm going with this.

Anyway, so you're actually looking at what the proteins do? We did that sort of thing in simulation at that place where they also did some folding, it's awesome. Well, we did it with a thing that was too small to be a protein, I think. But still awesome.

I miraculously managed to score 100% on my chemistry exam and 90% in maths/mechanics without cramming more than an hour between the both of them, and after having low enough attendance to cause concerns. I realise it will get harder in the years to come and I'm trying to sort out everything anyway. Really, calculus is one of those things I just get. I actually find it easier to use logs and exponentials for calculating half-life stuff (lol nuclear chemistry) than multiplying by 2 a million times like our teacher suggested.

Also I think I'm a bit sleep deprived and thus ranting about random stuff. Sorry.

Folding@Home is an amazing project that stanford is putting on. I highly suggest everyone go and download the program and set it up.

Interestingly enough we've been talking a lot about cloud computing in my IS class right now and F@H comes up quite a bit.

It's mostly about mapping signal cascades and other biological pathway. Finding out which proteins interact with which other ones. You try and build a large scale model of the interactions in the cell, and identify when the levels of different proteins are up and down regulated (such as in a mutated or diseased individual for example). Is good stuffs.

I'm jealous, that's just not fair. Smiley: tongue Should make things easier for you though. Always nice to have something like that under your belt.

Apparently WoL liked our twins fiasco, and it put a number by my name. Smiley: confused I've never had a number by my name before, so it made me happy. I'd say it made me feel awesome, but 74 is a rather large number, and that pops the ego. I'm not quite sure what it means exactly, but either way, I'm going to have to ask our priest to die more often if it gets me ranked. Smiley: lol

Side note: It appears all sorts of people solo heal that fight now. I'm dying to try it, putting out that much HPS is addicting.

There used to be a F@H Allakhazam group. The sticky is still there in =28. I always ran it on my old PC but since that got stolen and my new PC can only sometimes handle WoW when nothing else (except VoIP) is running, I'll pass. I really need to get Jack to look for that spare RAM he's got lying around while I'm off to be nice to Aethien.

And Protein, that does sound interesting. Also complicated as hell. Like biology. Seriously, I get all the sciences without doing anything, up to and including the basics of quantum mechanics, but biology just totally blows my mind. If it's small-scale in vitro biochemistry, it's still fine, but beyond that I don't get anything. Thus my B in my biology exam. I think if I score a good A in the second one, I still get an A for the course. Maybe.

Oh and Maz, I blame the slip in vocabulary on Noam Chomsky. If you don't know the name, Google him, should make for fairly interesting reading material.

Ooooh, a number. That's pretty cool. My guild still won't let me bring my druid to raids.

And Kahliva, if you can get basic QM right now, you can get the rest later. Two words: chemical physics

I can never keep the names and acronyms strait in biology (my wife can, she's a biologist), but I'm happy with my physics and chemistry.
#1997 Mar 31 2010 at 2:46 PM Rating: Good
I haven't done basic QM in years but I do know I only got a C in my quantum physics exam. I got an A in calculus in the same semester, with 10% attendance. So basically, QM involves revising more than I did back then, which still isn't an awful lot, but it makes it hard enough to be bothered about in my book.

Actually the exam about orbitals where we had to draw them on A3 paper (I know, I know) was not all that bad.

Also, how many science people are in this subforum? Counting Mazra, too...

Ahhh - I started on this way back in the day when Seti@Home started it all. Then they brought out their BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure Network Computing or something) platform and I had about 15 PC's at work and home running various projects like Seti, Folding@Home, Climateprediction, LHC(Large Hadron Collider) and a lot of others. We got new PC's at work and I never got organised again - mind you, that was when I was still using dialup at work :)

For those interested BOINC and a list of some of the available projects

On another note - less than 2 weeks till my new toy arrives!
