I downloaded the 10-day free trial, started up as a Dwarf Warrior, killed some things, completed some quests, got over the awkwardness of playing my first MMO on PC (just never been a big PC gamer, played FFXI and EQOA both on PS2, only games I ever played on PC was Age of Empires, Half Life, Ceasar, and Alien vs. Predator), traveled around a bit, got to level 9, all in all had an enjoyable time, will upgrade my account once the 10 days are up.

Anyway to the point of my post. Besides the whole Hordes vs. Alliance conflict carried over from all the previous warcraft games, is there any real plot to this game, or is it all individual "mini-stories" through quests.

Take FFXI for instance, there were individual "mini-stories" throughout the game from the quests, like hmmm, the dragoon quest where it gives you a nice little story about how the dragons and the dragoons have a blood pact, and about the last dragoon, anyway on top of those mini-stories there was also the Over-all story line that you could progress through by gaining rank.

Is there an over-all story line in WoW, or is it simply the Horde vs. Aliance free for all?

No I knew there was a long backstory that followed through the warcraft games(didn't really realize how big it had grown though), I was just thinking that this game might have furthered that story along, instead from my very limited experience in the game, it seems that we are just playing as characters in that world going about their normal lives, with the ocasional raids or what not.

I realize FF is a stand alone game, so it needed an over-all story for everything to make sence(otherwise one might be inclinded to say, why the hell do I have to beat that shadowlord up, he isn't doing anything to me, hell he lives in an icey waistland why should I even waist my time going up there), and warcraft really doesn't need such stories because it is part of something bigger that this individual game.

I just enjoy stories in my games and was hoping for some world wide(in-game world) story line, but if not it's ok because I know I will enjoy the little quest stories, I'm already finding some quest stories fun and entertaining.

FFXI's main story with always seemed to me that I was just a random Adventurer, and my being there was just convinces or a coincidence. For the CoP intro I was not even in the whole first twenty minutes of cutscene.

WoW's story goes about things very differently and I am thankful for it. The "mini-stories" are the main story itself. Those are your exploits as a hero. And they are not individual, many of them often link to other quest chains later. Sure it starts out with humble beginnings you choosing to take up arms to defend your people. However, this changes and you begin to appear as hero in the people's eyes. I don't think FFXI ever considered me a hero.

I have to wonder about your name b/c there have been several threads to this nature before.

There are several quests that will span 6-10 levels or more. My favorite is the Dragonkin Menace, which starts at level 54 and ends in the Onyxia raid at level 60. Other popular ones on the Alliance side are the Missing Diplomat (starts in the late 20's and ends around level 35), and the epic Dwarven Dark Iron wars, which is the theme for the alliance dwarves the whole way through, from level 10 (where they've taken out a camp in southern Dun Morough), then to level 18 (where they're trying to blow up a dam), level 25-30 where they've taken out a dwarven town and nearby bridge, right on up to level 60 where you get to kill the Dark Iron Emperor and "save" the dwarven Princess, daughter of King Magni.

There are plenty of overarching storyline themes, but no one persistent questline throughout the game.

Towards the end of the story lines it starts to get a little more centered on YOU, though was still some tagging along... like in the later Zillart its like "oh you came too, well come help me kill this thing" in a sense, not in so many words.

Anyways, yea I like that WoW's story is more about YOU, and what YOU do. It chains together nicely too in places. I will admit I miss the way FFXI's story was set-up with the clearly defined missions and story lines and such. Not that there aren't the equivelients in WoW, like the Ony Key line, but still...

That's because the name given is generic, and when I went to create an account with a nice real name, it said my email address already had an account so I went to retrieve the password, low and behold my account name was this, now I'm at work, so i can't really go browsing through the website to see how to change my forum name, but I probably will do it tonight if I'm not wrapped up in playing WoW.

The thing with stories ("real" stories) is that there is a beginning, middle and end with various elements in differing degrees (depending on the story, type of story, genre, etc) such as story arc, conflict, resolution. With an MMO, it behooves the company to not have an end because they want to make more and more money.

It is sort of the difference between American (United States) soap operas and Latin American novellas. There is no end in sight to the Days of Our Lives while Porque Diablos was written with an end.

Well, i will sum up the end of Warcraft 3:Frozen Throne expansion for you. A Night Elf dude that was exiled thousands of years ago(named Illidan, night elves can only die if killed), and he really thought he was right, he was a enemy but i truly thought of him as something like Riddick, a bad guy doing good things one way or another. Anyways, he teamed up with Blood elves( a decendent of the High elves who are decendents of Night elves only the High elves are greedy with magic), and the Naga(forgot about their originality but their those cool looking scaley fish people, not the murlocs by the way) and they all went to Outland, the home world of the Orcs(Orcs made the dark portals all the way form the earlier games which ripped their world apart) to do something or another. So somehow we are in Northrend, a continent on in World Of Warcraft but its an icy place(you guessed it) up north. That is where Illidan tries to stop the corrupted Prince Arthas from reaching the throne. He fails and to this day Arthas is trapped in his icey kingdom(the throne is where the Lich King, lord of the Scourge, was, Arthas and the liches spirit bonded). So Illidan and his companions went back to Outland.

Now, 6 years has past since the Frozen Throne, and the undead on the horde side is ruled by a woman named Sylvanas, she leads the Forsaken undead(broke off from the scourge, now have free will and you COULD say arent exactly evil, some of them anyways). Now that the war is over, and the orcs are not bound to a blood pact with a dead demon, the orcs also do not have to be so blood thirsty. The only human kingdom now is that of(forgot what the name of it is) Stormwind.
So, now the drums of war are coming once again, and the tension between the Horde and the Alliance has reached its limits.

now of Burning Crusade(expansion coming out in June):

Not long ago a ship(call it what you want, its a space ship but that sounds to modrernish) called Exodas crash landed holding a large group of the remaining non-tainted Draenei are. They were seeking Azeroth because they heard of the rumors of this world defeating the Burning Legion(warcraft 3 non-expansion), which is a vile demon group that has destroyed who knows how many planets. Plus, now that the Dark Portal(gateway from Azeroth to Outland), is open and the Bloodelves(now on horde side) are in their old land of Quel Thalas. Level 60-70 mobs are in Outland plus many stunning instances/dungeons. Thats what i know so far.

SORRY if im confusing especially with me ( and ) everywhere. Ever since Kindergarden i played Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, so the history i know in me enough its hard to explain each it, i just scratched the surface.

NOW FOR SOME ADVICE!!!

Are you on a RP or RPPVP(roll playing or roll playing player vs player) server? If not you might want to since you like story line. Recently the dwarves have been wanting to know of their past(they are one of the oldest races on Azeroth). Plus their drinkers, so its fun be be them.

My suggestion for feeling in the mood of a story is reading this and that first link.

Heres another link i found quite awhile back:
http://www.blizzplanet.com/modules.php?action=Content&pa=showpage&pid=175

Much less heavy of a read.

Alright well i hope i helped in SOME way!
