Which to Upgrade Video Card or Ram?Follow

#1 Nov 26 2006 at 7:43 PM Rating: Decent
I am looking to buy new parts for my computer and i was wondering which would have the greater outcome on the gameplay if i upgraded the ram or the video card i currently have a Nvidia GeForce Fx5200 128mb PCI video card and i also have 512mb of ram. Which of these should be upgraded in order to make the larger difference. Ty to the people who post.

Ram 1st.

Because it's much much cheaper and will make a bigger difference. Get 1G at least, and 2G if you can.

Your video card may not be imba, but it'll do the job, i have a very simalar one in my machine and it does fine, although i do not have access to certain things like "full screen glow" but it'd be off anyways if i did.

So would you recommend buying a 1gig stick for like 120$ or something like that instead of like two 512mb sticks because of the future adding capacity?

I'm 99% sure you could find a 1G stick on sale somewhere online or in a store for cheaper than $120 dollars, but yes exactly, putting a 1G stick in now will allow for future expansion should you ever want more ram.

Another stick of 512 will be noticeably cheaper and for the time being, provide the same effect but if you ever want to upgrade later, it would become disposable and worthless.

Two 512 sticks actually run faster then a 1GB stick, because of the lower capacity. But, it's really not that noticeable unless you're comparing a 2/4GB stick to a 512 stick... 1GB will serve you well, but 2GB is nice.

Actually I would upgrade both. Ram 1 GB is decent enough for low end games like WoW. I would go for a better gfx tho. Try to come up with a budget if possible, but the thing is, based on what you say, your pc is based on AGP gfx series and ddr memory, kinda old.

Look at http://www.tomshardware.com/ for a good overview of new computer hardware (performance etc.)

I buy almost all of my stuff from Newegg usually great prices, cheap shipping and VERY good service.

When I first go Wow, I had video lag. I bought a 256 meg video card, but it didn't help much. I put 1 gig of RAM in and everything was beautiful. The reason apparently is that you need ram to hold the large amount of model data, but you don't need a lot of video power to draw.

I had the exact opposite experience with Warcraft III--you need video processing power to draw but not as much RAM for data. It depends upon the graphics engine.

I am kind of on a budget of sorts and i would like to know if anyone knew of any reasonable prices on video cards or ram. I see like 1gb normally around 120$
but i would like to find cheaper and i also would like to know of a good video card to buy that is also decently priced not over like 150$. So if anyone has any ideas or any past experience it would be greatly appreciated. Oh i have a PCI only slot so that is a key part as well only PCI cards. Ty
