Last night I decided I wanted a [Tiny Crimson Whelpling]. So I took my level 27 dwarf hunter and started farming.

300 some odd kills later (I went from 27 1/2 to 28 1/2), it finally dropped.

I now know how Calabar feels about finding those rare pets. I could have bought one, but it's not the same as going out and doing the work for yourself.

Yea, yea, FFXI reference in the title.

You lucky SOB. That's the same exact grind that killed my interest in my hunter, and the fact that I had to sit around in for 3 hours to find a Gnomeregan group.

Luckily for me, I hate Gnomeregan.

you've inspired me to go out and farm for one...should be easy doing it as a 58, but knowing my luck it'll still take me days to find one.

I skipped Gnomeregan on half my characters. It made me a better man.

Grats on the pet, Webjunky. They sell for a bit, don't they?

They sell for about 50g on Dark Iron, but I've heard it go for 100+ on other servers. Being a vanity-only item, the demand for it can be quite unreliable.

I'm keeping mine though. The one thing that kept me going was the fact that I was getting XP for farming the whelps in the Wetlands. Either way, it was a win/win situation for me. And being BM specced I tore through all of them at a fairly quick pace.

I have never understood the problem with these. I have gotten 5 red whelplings 2 black whelplings and 1 emerald whelpling. I have made around 800g off those plus the small flame sacs they drop. All on one character in less than 2 weeks.

I guess I'm just lucky

Well, i was in Dustwallow killing Searing Whelps for 5 or 6 full levels from 43-48/49 til i moved over to Tanaris. And i bet i killed a few thousand whelps and never got a pet to drop. Not even a blue.

That's how unlucky most of us are.

Nice, I tried farming for it a few times, but each time I only came away with xp. I did get half a level though, and I say I must of killed at least a hundred (I wasn't too motivated). Good thing there isn't any Brood of Alexstrasza faction yet.

Ahhh.... *lets out rage*

I farmed for the red (Wetlands/Badlands) one and the green (Swamp of Sorrows) one on two of my characters, and never even saw one. I went from 32 on my hunter to 44 trying, and 33 thru 39 on my warlock farming the little buggers. It's horrible. I just wanted one...*pity*

Grats! I'm so jealous. My mage went up several levels in her 20s pretty much just from farming those whelps in the Wetlands, and I never got one :( She'll just have to make do with her parrot.

Gratz WJ! Mr. Wiggles and I are doing just fine. Although he does smell something awful at times.

May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits! *grins*

Congratulations Webjunky! Though I must say you have interesting timing.

I spent a huge chunk of my weekend farming green whelps with my 56 orc hunter. And this was not the first trip to the swamp. Once I decided I’d like to make a blood elf ice mage when the expansion comes out I also decided I’d like for him to have a green whelp.

I’d guess I farmed for a total of about 10 to 12 hours this weekend. Before that I slaughtered green whelps for about another 14 hours, give or take an hour or two. Still no pet. I hate it when a green item drops, as its rather like a stillborn dragon whelp. *sniff*

I’ve had good luck with red whelps, at least when compared to other pets. My first character, my human rogue, got his to drop in about two weeks of farming on and off. My orc hunter got his red whelp on his second outing. But the green and “black” whelps took my alliance characters literally months of farming to finally loot them. And my orc seems to be following the same pattern.

Green whelps are particularly hard to farm as there are so few of them. I’ll kill them all off and have to stand around waiting for more to spawn. I also tend to take breaks when someone of the appropriate level to do the Stranglethorn quest appears. I don’t want to hog them all. Sadly I don’t get any xp for farming the beasties. But I do try to make good use of my time. I’ll take various melee weapons and level up my skills while killing and save on the cost of arrows at the same time.

Hopefully I’ll get a green whelp to drop before the expansion comes out. My poor blood elf mage really need a green whelp pet. After all, he’ll only have a panda cub, a nether whelp, a black tabby and a tranquil mechanical yeti. He’ll be practically petless.

Awh! I want a panda cub, and nether whelp, and black tabby, and a Murky, and a Mr. Wiggles.. I miss out on all the good pets!

I have a mechanical yeti, though. Yay, 300 engineering!

I've been farming crimson whelplings both for money and for a pet for my blood elf paladin when the expansion comes out. In the past I have done pretty well with them (roughly one for ever one hundred or so killed). I'm on a stretch now where I've killed probally nine hundred over about four days without getting a drop. Figures, when I want to /keep/ one... >.<

Congrats, Webjunky!

Like the some what newbie i still am i lucked into the whelp on my second kill while exploring. Being a 40 lev warrior i never paid these guys much attention and never realized the true rarity of the drop. A bit later I happened to mention this to a mage friend and she went into excitement overdrive and asked to buy it. Anyway i sold it to her for 50 G as i need money for my pony and she really wanted the thing. Now after seeing it live i want one for myself and like a lot of you guys i am farming them like mad (killed close to 100)and all i gotten is exp, silver, flame sacs, etc. and 5 green drops. Better lucky than good as they say.

I was sure I'd replied to this... oh well. And we have a poster called nipplehead. I'm flabbergasted.

Webby, I hate you. Really, really hate you, deep down in the abyss of my heart. Why? I spent three days killing those buggers, and nothing. I've spent several days killing Green whelps for the tiny Emerald Whelpling, and spent days on end farming the Scalding whelps for flame sacs, skins and the Dark Whelpling. I';ve yet to see any drop.

Congratulations, mate! Smiley: grin

Jubling > Whelpling

But congrats! My wife farmed the green whelps forever until she got one to drop to fund her mount. I always thought she'd like the "flavor" pets, but I was wrong.

I have seen one whelp drop (unsure of the color, it was in the badlands) and it tore up our guild.

The group consisted of 3 female hunters (not a totally awesome group), let me just say the drama was pretty freaking intense.

Of course I was the first person to back down, I dont care that much, and If i did I would just go farm it myself, the second girl NAGGED everyones freaking head off until the third girl sold it and split the cash, between the 2 of them (Note i didnt get a chunk, grumble).

Then both girls left the guild and took their men with them, not a pretty sight.
The only thing worse, was when a bloodrazor droped in Jintha'alor - OHH god was that a nasty and intense brawl.

Stupid rare BOE items, they are just disasterous.

My kid really, really, REALLY wanted a pet dragon. So... I leveled a bit in my 20s in wetlands. Nada. In my thirties I did grinding in the swamp. For several levels. Nada. In my forties I killed black ones in Badlands... nada.

Then I went to help someone on a quest in Badlands. We did it. Maybe it was karma. I decided I'd kill a few whelps. Nada. Okay, just one more. BINGO!

Got my kid his black whelpling pet. He loves it.

You get one of these too early, you realize you just burned a major divine intervention in reality. So at some point in the future -- whatever it is -- just don't expect anything good to happen. You got your whelp pet on only 300 kills. You've had your day in the sun, Roscoe!

5 3-hour sessions in the Wetlands and 4 Tiny Crimson Whelpings have dropped. 2 on the 1st session and 2 on the 4th session. Selling at 100g * 3 = 300g for 15 hours. At level 60 its not easy gold, but not too bad.

I think the reason this is so amusing is because it’s true. *smiles*

You realize, don’t you, that according to the above your future is very bleak. One morning you’re going to step out your front door and an ocean liner will drop onto your head, followed by a satellite and whatever comet is passing closest to the earth.
