Harvesting courtesyFollow

I assumed there was a nonspoken rule of common courtesy when it comes to harvesting. Everyone I know will not harvest from a node that already has someone there. And if someone is killing something on top of a node you leave it alone. Such is the way I am used to. maybe my friends and I arenaive, or a minority. But it really pisses me off when others dont follow the unspoken rule.

So today I have a couple hours to kill which is extremely rare. I never harvest any rares but I keep thinking to myself the next time will be it. I run into SS and check out the croc cave. It is THE place to harvest ore. I look around, no one is here, so I dig in.

5 minutes later someone else runsup beside me and starts to harvest the node Im working on. In say I say "Hi there. Im working on this one... Im sure you can find another right down the cavern". No response. He continues. I finally leave and head down looking for more. I find another and pick away. Hes right behind me and does it again.

"Hey dude... common courtesy... find another node..." nothing again.

It happened two more times. I finally left to go group with my husband for a quest, but I was reallypissed by the lack of courtesy. I'm assuming he was a farmer, which pisses me off even more.

So, I guess Id like to know what everyones thought on the Harvest rule is. Do you join someone on a node? Do you leave it alone if someone is there?

It's not only common courtesy, it's common sense. People never cease to amaze me both in game and out, with how rude and uncaring they can be.

It really is an unspoken rule, but some people are just jerks. Theres been many times where Ive been harvesting T5, and I get attacked, and have to stop and fight the mob, and someone runs up and harvests my node. Or Im sitting there mining away, and another guy will run up and start mining the same piece of ore, or whatever. Ive also had experiences where Im running toward a particular node, and just get there, and some guy runs up and grabs it before I get a chance too. Very annoying, and I think it would be fantastic if SOE implements an encounter locking system for nodes. Would put a stop to stuff like this in a heartbeat.

It is both a courtesy and an unspoken rule, but therein lies the rub... it is more unspoken than rule and various SOE staff members have stated in numerous places that SOE does not acknowledge any ownership of or right to complete the harvesting of a node. In fact, they have stated that nodes do not belong to anyone... that they are fair game to whoever wanders by and wants to try their luck, so it is unlikely they will ever give us any kind of a node lock.

That being said, I still go out of my way to not harvest a node that might potentially belong to another player. This is, after all, a game and to my way of thinking, part of the concept of having fun would imply the facet of not adding stress or frustration to another player's session.

I have only just started to harvest T5 so I have no hands on knowledge of how things are in T6 but I have heard there is a lot of competition for nodes. Hopefully, as time goes by, things will loosen up there and civility will return...

Sometimes if a person has there settings turned down they can not actually see you in the process of mining a ore. OF course it seems pretty logical if somebody is standing there faceing the object that they are mining it.

You got some people out there who enjoy the fact that they can be jerks and do this to you and SOE won't punish them. Just because its not law that doesn't mean its right. I haven't had this problem as much lately, but then again I am only in tier 2 harvesting atm.

Saddest part of non courtesy, at least on my server, is that most of the time you get your nodes stolen by...members of the top raiding guild of the server. There they are level 60 covered in T6 fabled gear, greying out the crocs in the cave and still stealing the nodes ppl are fighting crocs for, and not only do they do that but they take the time to give them a bag of sh*t with it.

I am sure i have killed for less than that in another life...

/end rant

For the farmers that don't care about courtesy, they don't care if they steal or not. The bottom line is...the bottom line.

More harvests = more rares
More rares = more plat in the bank
More plat in the bank = more real life money they can get

Face it, this is an environment where no-one can touch you. You are invincable from other players.

Will a farmer let courtesy get in the way of making real money to a faceless toon? I don't think so. And since SOE stands firm about node-ownership, I doubt they will punish someone for being rude.

Well, Lady DSD, I pretty much agree with everything you've said. I don't harvest from a node that someone else is already harvesting (or even standing next to), and I consider it rude for others to do it to me. There are, of course, times when it's just a simple mistake - I tend to run around in Stealth, and one time I stealthed up to a node and started picking it. A moment later, I heard a "tink tink" separate from my own, and looked around. Another person had rode up and started mining - but quickly stopped with an apology of, "Sorry, I didn't see you." Which was a fair answer, since I wasn't visible a second before she started... =^_^=

In your case, it seems likely that you probably had either a botter or a non-English-speaking "Farmer" running the area you were in. Communication was impossible for one reason or another, and the only thing you can really do in that situation is alert other players on your server about that player's behavior. If he's like that all the time, you'll get other people speaking up about it, and eventually a self-appointed "bot hunter" will start watching his actions, trying to find reportable proof to get the character/account banned.

I have never had a problem finding plenty of nodes to harvest from. I don't even need to steal other peoples nodes either. If i see another person harvesting i can usually run to a different part of the zone and there isn't a problem.

Im pretty sure that getting the rare harvest's doesn't come from a particular node, but rather it depends on how many times you harvest.

ie. you might get a rare item 1 out of every 150 harvests.

The only place that i every felt a little cramped harvesting was the t1 zones. But then again, you don't harvest in these zones for profit, you do it so you can level up to the higher levels of crafting.
