brief MMORPG surveyFollow

Hello EQ2 players.

For those of you that dont know me, I am a long-time MMORPG player, with my current character being a level 72 Galka Summoner in Final Fantasy XI.

In real life, I am a senior at the University of Minnesota. My major is a Bachelor's of Science in Sociology and Statistics. As part of my senior project, I am studying the Social Effects of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (SEMMOG), with a website dedicated to this topic, www.semmog.org.

I have created a BRIEF survey in particular dealing with possible correlations between addictive tendencies and MMORPGs. What I need is your help. I need people to fill out a survey to supply me with adequete data for my study.

the survey is here:
http://www.semmog.org/survey.html

The survey takes less than 1 minute to fill out

I realise filling out surveys isn't exactly the most enthralling or exciting thing in the world to do, but I please ask that you take a minute your time and help me with an integral part of my project which is taking me months to complete.

Thank you.

My problem with this survey is that you've assumed upfront that such a thing as addiction to games exists.

And if it does, why would it be more socially impactful than addiction to television, food or alcohol?

Plus this whole line of thinking has been so done to death, it feels quite passe now.

Sorry to be negative, you'd get a better response if it didn't seem so obviously biased.

I did the survey, it was painless and took less than a minute. Got to love truth in advertising.

Even if this topic has been done, it's still valid for research. And he is definately not trying to prove anything to us.

Good luck with your research, tell the prof to give you an A, or at least some time off to play. :)

Blasted ideas come to me in a trickle...

I was thinking about the survey and the question about how many hours per day. If the study is about addiction, I think it needs to be expanded to time outside the game. Questions like:

- Do you participate in online MMORPG forums?
- How many different forums do you review per day?
- How many forums do you actively participate in by posting?
- How many posts do you make per day?
- How many hours per day do you spend discussing the game with RL others?
- How much time do you spend thinking about the game? (a more subjective question)

I feel that there is much more to the addiction issue than just play time. It would become a real problem if your "off-time" is overwhelmed and consumed by the game. i.e. forums, RL friends, planning for the events tonight, etc. Your productivity at work or school could easily decline - maybe so far as to be fired/expelled.

Addiction to MMORPG is real and I'm glad it's again being brought out to the light. I know what it's like to be there and back. It good we are all reminded now and then of what can happen when you go too far.

I love to do surveys. I participate in 3 on-line surveys on a regular basis. I even get to test products with one of them. So I will glady participate. I hope I am the outlyer because I am an almost 50 yr single female who plays MMORPGs.

I would have thought more like just a few days shy of 27. :)

Don't forget about SO factioning! It critical to getting fed!

My Girlfriend did not like me playing so much until she figured out it was my escape from the RL grind. Work and Bills /bleah!

I use to spend much more time playing until all the new games came out. :-D

I do think the questions were focused in a narrow band and could be interpreted differently. There is one that asks about at anytime ever did RL get put off for a game. It did not specify any consistency over a period of time.
