Thinking of moving from FFXI to EQ2.. Convince me!Follow

I've played FFXI for a year and a half now and have discovered pretty much every area in the game. The RL friends that I joined the game and adventured with have long since quit. I'm looking to start over in a new environment and in a new storyline.

Yesterday I downloaded demo and preview movies from almost every MMORPG out there and EQII was the one that really caught my eye.

What I'd like to know is, "Has anyone else switched from FFXI to EQ2?" "Is it worth it?" I'm just looking for honest opinions about things like graphics, population, game progression, economy.. (Please don't rant.)

My EQ2 free trial demo is currently downloading, but so I've read, it isn't an accurate reflection of the full game. So, I'm hoping to get some information from players.

Thanks in advance,

Nikolai of FFXI

You'll find that topic has been discussed thoroughly here.

That thread compares WoW to EQ2. While I've never played WoW, it seems everyone likes it better than EQ2.

I came from FFXI...these are 2 very different games.

There is so much to see and do in EQ2, so much more than just xp grinding (which you can choose to do, but you do not have to).

I personally don't believe the economy is as bad as FFXI's, at least not on my server (Faydark). I have never felt the need to farm just to get enough money to buy those super uber items I needed so I could get invited to a party.

I like the game progression. My personal playstyle is that of a solo quester. I get all my xp by completing quests, killing the stuff needed to complete the quest, etc. But there are so many different ways to play this game. You don't need the cookie cutter 6-person party you needed to play FFXI.

The populations vary from server to server. Faydark is not barren, but it is not overly crowded either. There are many small guilds (which are EQ2's linkshells), with varying playstyles that should fit just about every need. I am the co-leader of a small guild; we group together sometimes to help each other out, but mostly we just keep each other company through chat and we craft for each other, whatever is needed.

It all depends on what you are looking for. Smiley: smile

My advice is to try it out. Enjoy the Isle and then play past it, as the cities and outlying areas are quite different than the Isle (but the Isle tutorial is fantastic).

They are both different games and both good in their own way. Give it a shot! Smiley: smile

Well I’m not going to convince you. If you need convincing to play this or any other game then the game is not for you. But I have played FFXI for over a year and got very bored with it. I play both EQ2 and WoW and both are similar games. WoW is easier and lots more PvP and EQ2 has more dept and little bit harder. Both are fast past and similar combat system. You will also see a big deference in the community in both games it not as strong as FFXI and that taking me some time to get used to.

also tutanbriarpaw that tread is from way back in Jan and EQ2 has change alot since then :)

True. I think my main point was that we have the same question asked over and over. It seems no-one scrolls down the page, maybe even one page back, to check for similiar threads. Everyone just wants a quick answer without the slightest investment or effort.

Sure, there's no search function here...that's why there are over 4K posts. But you would be surprised how many questions can be answered by simply reading a few threads before posting.

I did look back a few pages and didn't see any "FFXI - EQ2", and your right, there is no search function. But anyways, thank you Dellanna for sharing your experiences.

I played the trial version up to level 6 and completed almost every quest. I, personally, am looking for a game where I can adventure and solo as much as possible. Like you said, the monotony of "cookie-cutter" parties in FFXI... I'm so sick of those. Well, It looks like there's only one thing left to do..

I'm going to go find the Collectors Edition of EQ2 if I can.

See you in game!

--> I've found the collectors edition of EQ2. Is that up-to-date with current expansions? I've searched around the forums and I'm only more confused since there seems to be 3 or 4 expansions from the original. But I can't tell if they're pre- or post- collectors edition.

Other question: If I go buy the collectors edition, can I just download all the expansions or do I have to go buy box sets?

First of all, the collector's edition is the very first edition so no, the one existing expansion, (Desert of Flames), is not included. Also not included are the two available adventure packs (Splitpaw and the vampire one - I forget the name atm).

What you do get in that package is a nice tin collector's case, a gold coin, a CD of game music, some other trinkets, (cloth map and such), and some unique in-game items that can only be had with that package. The most impressive of these is a "baby dragon" that will be a house pet in your inn room or apartment. (No, you can't take him out in the world so no, he won't attack or defend for you.)

By the way, the baby dragons are extremely limited (one per player) so they have a VERY high resale value on most servers. On Toxxulia, they tend to sell for a minimum of a few plat, which is a lot of money to a new player. You could easily sell a baby dragon and buy a horse with the proceeds.

If you install the collector's edition, you will still have to patch for the entire year of updates but you'd have to do that with any version of the discs you buy so no additional time is lost there.

Yes, you can get a digital download of the adventure packs and the expansion. Be aware that buying a CD copy of DoF will get you some nifty in-game items and some aditional trinkets (like a second different gold coin), that you do not get with the digital download. Your call.
