Just got LVL 20 with RangerFollow

#1 Nov 02 2005 at 2:01 PM Rating: Decent
I got to LVL 20 and did my quest, I did the first 20 LVL almost all solo and some in 2 or 3 person groups. But looking at the skills I will be getting from now on they all seem to be ranged skills. Since I am not getting in more mele skills will this hurt my ability to solo? Or will I have to change how I have to do things. at 19 I could take on lvl 21 mobs in Thundering Stepps without much regen time between them. I use food and Drinks and The spirit of the Bear Toem for health and Power Regen. I have read but not used any poison's yet but heard they help. So I guess what I am asking is
Can I still solo at a good pace
If not is there any demand for Rangers in a party because I am always LFG and do not get many invites.

Thanks,
Greato

Congratulations ranger!

To answer your question, no - not all your new spells will use ranged weapons. Although you are now an archer and it is intended that you will do the bulk of your killing from a distance, there are some melee skills in the list. It's just that many of these skills are named as though they were bow skills even though they are actually more "up close and personal"!

Also be aware that in the coming levels you will be receiving some outstanding utility spells, (like exac @ lvl 25), that will put you in much higher demand with groups.

BTW - you should start using poisons as soon as possible. They give you an incredible edge since every proc is "free" damage. You should also be using a pair of fast imbued dual wield weapons in order to maximize both your DPS and your proc count.

I typically see one or more poison procs of 120+ dmg at or near the beginning of every fight.

(I use a poison with a high front end damage and a low DoT component because additional procs mid-fight will over-write the DoT but not the initial damage.)

Good luck, and welcome to the fold ranger.

OBD, during Ranger solo melee, and using abilities that turn you invisible, will it make you invisible to the mob even if it has agro on you?

...and...if you are invisible and you leap behind the mob, will it turn to face you?

This all leads to, turn inviso, leap behind the mob, use a read/flank attack.

Do-able?

Good place to buy poison - every village has an apothacary shop. This is also where you would go to buy app 2 versions of spells if you wanted them. In that shop will be an NPC who sells poisons and other potions.

In South Qeynos, there is also an apothicary shop, (listed on your in-game map), with an even larger selection of poisons. (Be sure and check upstairs there too.)

And finally, you can usually find the best poisons for any level on the local broker. Player made poisons have more charges per vial and a better selection of effects. But they also cost a lot more so if you have a friend ingame who is an alchemist, he can probably hook you up with any poison you might ever want to try and save you some money.

Poisons come with a large variety of different effects. Some cause assending or desending damage with some combination of small medium or large initial effect, (front end), followed by small medium or large Damage over Time effect or DoT, (back end). There is always a trade off, so if you want a large DoT it will come at the cost of a small front end and vice versa.

In addition, there are poisons that de-buff the mob to one or more kinds of damage. These can be extremely useful when you are in a group with a player who can cause the type of damage you are de-buffing.

You can apply multiple poisons as long as they are of diferent types. So, you could use a desending damage poison and a strength de-buff at the same time.

And finally, since it may well be your next question... to use a poison, place it in one of your two activatable slots, then right click on it and choose "use". An application of poison will last 12 hours or 100 procs - whichever comes first.

I don't know if he can still see you or not, but what keeps him from turning around when you slide in behind him is that you stun him before you stealth and change places. (And don't forget to turn off auto-attack!)

Once he is stunned (or my favorite, down on his knees), you hop over him, do a quick spin turn and light him up with a stealthed back stab.

With this technique, you can do huge amounts of damage. It's so sick that it seems unfair to the mobs... well... almost unfair anyway...

I'm new to the game (5 weeks at this point), so I don't know how it used to be, but I haven't ever had to turn off my AutoAttack in order to do the Stun/backstab hokey pokey. I do the stun, get behind, and do the Stealthing attack, then do the big-damage backstab. It works every time unless I have my Invis dropped by my target's friend... And I usually do end up having a few Autoattack shots go off in the middle.

I don't think damage breaks stuns any more, although I couldn't tell you when that changed.

Damage does still break stuns. They changed it so that weaker enemies are not broken out of stuns easily, but even arrow and highers can still be broke out of stuns.

Heck, my Assassin's stun doesn't even work on anything higher than even con, and I've never seen an upgrade for it on the Broker.
