such a huge debate it seems, but, if someone were to be thinking of making a swashbuckler (on Najena--Hint Hint Kindle :P) would it be smarter as far as crafting is concerned to go alchemist to make my own poisons or go with scholar and make my own spell upgrades? i'd even love to be able to make my own weapons (dual wield of course, i'm a weapon nut) but i think poisons/spells would be smarter)

just looking for feedback

The sink into crafting to make weapons or armor that are at par with your level is huge, almost as much time as adventuring. You may find that it is much faster to just buy your armor/weapons upgrade grom the broker, from players that craft full time.

Spell upgrades are also replaced at various levels with upgrades to a spell line, requiring you to level your Artisan high enough to make those spells.

But if you are into crafting and adventuring equally, then that can be your bag, baby.

You might also consider Carpenter, since making furniture for your upgraded room can always reduce the room cost, regardless of what level you are.

The crafter of poisons sounds intriguing though...

I have a level 34 swashbuckler.. and I would say going alchemist would be best.
I cant tell you how many poisons I go threw.... SOOO many.. So it would be best to make those, as you will be using them the most. Also as an alchemist (well any clas I guess) you can make inks which you could give to a jeweler to make you your scrolls. Since ink is the most annoying thing to make for a scholor the jeweler will most likely make you the scroll at a reduced cost.

Also, you have to be a scholor before you can be an alchemist. So you would have time to try out both to see which one you would like best!
Alchemists can also make extracts which are requried for imbued weapons... Making it quite a few extra gold cheaper to get a weaponsmith or armorsmith to make you those imbued equipment!
AS an alchemist you can also make potions... Which are also very nice to have.

And the other thing you can make is fighter scrolls to!

In my opinion alchemist would be the best class for a swashbuckler to be. You will want to be upgrading most of your abilities to Adept 1 anyways... Making the appIV scrolls useless.

ALso as tutanbriarpaw said, you would need to be about 10 levels higher with a weapon or armorsmith then your adventuring level to get the most benifit out of the class.
Where as with alchemy you would only need to be about 3-7 levels higher with it then adventuring level..
And with jewler you would only have to be the same level (unless you want the imbued rings.. which are extremely nice.. so you would need to be 10 levels higher then adventure)

If you want to support your own character, i think i would pick alchemy for your poisons.

Spell upgrades are not so hard to find, especially if you have the splitpaw saga adventure pack, where adpets drop at a maniacal rate. Maniacal is weak. You still can find adepts on the broker for a decent price most of the time.

As far as weapons go, just like the poster before me said, it will require you a lot of time to be able to craft good weapons that are in line with your adventuring level. Not to mention that theres a lot of good weapons that drop out there in the field or that you can quest for...in fact as a swashy if you have the patience enough to do heritage quests, you will prolly end up wearing the tomahawk and the serrated dirk for a long while, which may make your choice of weaponsmith not being so rewardful in the long run.

Hope that helps, note that its only my opinions though. You could even go provisioner and buy everything you need off the money you save for not having to pay high prices for food and drinks...
