Race and CraftingFollow

#1 Oct 12 2005 at 10:01 PM Rating: Decent
OK, I'm new, and I cna't find much info on it, but does anyone know if or how race affects crafting skills? Save for traits you can pick, do starting stats make a differance? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Nope, race does not affect your ability to craft in any way. Unlike EQ, EQ2 doesn't make any kind of skill check against a specific stat (like wis or int). Instead, skill ups seem to be triggered by the correct use of buffs during the crafting process.

Anyone can become a skilled craftsman in any area. All it takes is time.

Actually, each race gets to pick a +5 bonus to a certain crafting skill as one of their racial bonuses during the leveling process. They might even let you pick it twice and get + 10. Humans get metal working (armorer).

While it is true that you do get the option to bump up a racial based stat every ten levels, the other choices are so good that I have never taken the crafting bump on any of my characters.

By the way, half elves get to raise fletching (woodworking) and wood elves get to raise jewelery crafting (or vice versa).

Other options on the list you pick from include 5% increase to your power pool or +5 to a main stat like str or wis or agi. Frankly, I can't see a reason to choose crafting over something like power pool or your character's primary stat.

Also I don't think you can take the same one twice. You are choosing from the same set of options so the ones you didn't choose come up again in another ten levels... maybe you just saw it on the list more than once because you didn't choose it.

One thing to point out about the racial traits that boost crafting is that it's only a +5 to skill buff. Which is great when you have say 50 skill as it's a 5/50th or 1/10th increace to your skill but when you have say 200 skill it's 5/200 or 1/40th increace. So to tell the truth, their kinda useless.

So yes, pick your race and class however you want as stats are not the end all and be all.

Hmmmm, but 305 sure feels better when you're going for a pristine imbued cobalt item. I have seen no skill modifying gear. But STR, WIS, INT, et al gear is as common as it was in EQ1. After you take 5% WIS, after you take 5% STR, or whichever your character calls for, +5 in skills isn't too bad a choice. If TS'ing is going to be part of your game play.

I have seen a artisan's tunic that has +1 to all tradeskills. Of course it sells for some crazy amount of money (like 80 gold). I dont think its worth it for +1 though. Stat wise I think its like 6 mitigation cloth armor.

I have never picked those racial tradeskill bumps either, I always go for one of the other options.

That tunic is a reward for completing the TS quest that begins with reading, (examining), the note you got from the TS guy in the mage tower on the island. If you destroyed your original note, you can buy one from the same guy who gives out the quest.

It is a nice long quest that will take you all the way to lvl 9 or 10, (even if you have never crafted anything other than a tin spike!), and teach you to make items from all the different areas of expertise.

In addition to the tunic, you will also receive all the recipe books from 3 - 9 and a nice large bag. Over the course of the quest, the quest giver will also dole out enough cash for you to buy all the fuel and water you need to complete the quest.

And finally, he will let you keep all the items you make for him. You can sell them to an NPC or put them up for sale on the broker or even use them yourself, it's up to you.

The quest is worth doing for any character who is at all interested in crafting. It's both fun and rewarding!
