Duo ClassesFollow

Okay, my friend and I are planning to play EQ2 pretty soon.

I want to be a tank, and he wants to be a priest. I had a pretty good idea of what was going on with the classes are like (I am looking into it more than he is) ... and then they went and revamped the combat system. So now I am a bit unsure.

I am thinking Berserker or Guardian. We don't have plans to get really-involved at high levels with guilds or anything... and since we plan to be mostly duoing, I imagine that a Berserker would be the better choice, as we could use the extra DPS.

He wants to become either a Druid or a Shaman... he is leaning shaman. However, we have no idea between Defiler and Mystic, as to which would be better in this sort of duo combination.

My friend and I are both very familiar with EQ1. My friend wants a class that can heal well. He is worried that Shamans (or Druids) in EQ2 may be like they were in the first... not nearly as effective as a cleric (at raw healing). (BTW i'm not trying to start an argument by saying that). Anyway, my friend is looking for a class that is good at healing and has decent buffs, too. As I understand it, shamans can heal well and have slows/hastes as well as combat-oriented buffs.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated!

---btw, OldBlue, I know you like to lean towards healers being druids... but I really think my friend would rather be a shaman-type, so don't go trying to unnecessarily extol the virtues of the druid class!

Easy answer is that it doesn't relly make a difference.

All classes in the Priest line can heal effectively, just in a different way. I'll steal a few lines from OldBlueDragon for this information:
Druids specialize in HoT or Heal Over Time spells. We also have direct heals but our HoTs are what make us unique. Clerics are masters of reactive heals. These are heals that only take effect when the target of the heal takes damage. Clerics also have fine dirsct heals. Shamen specialize in wards. Their motto is "We don't need to heal damage that doesn't reach the tank!" They too receive direct heals.

Unlike the EQ1 Druids, EQ2 Druids are not the masters of Ports, Roots/Slow, and DoT's, nor can they track. I played one and had lots of fun. They are healers and have some combat buffs.

One thing to note is that of all the Priest classes, only Clerics can use plate armor. The others are regulated to chain at best.

Of the Fighter line is it also about the same. One may have slightly higher DPS than another, but not so much as to make a real difference. Each has it's own style and special abilities.

You might want to cruise through the spell lines here to see what your choices are.

Bottom line is to play a class you will have fun with. :)

Sadly until they arrange that mad aggro mystics get for doing absolutely nothing, i would have to say your friend should try at defiler. We tried it once again yesterday in Clefts of Rujark, with our Guardian going deep into one tunnel up to a mob, but without taunting it. The mob would take a LONG run out of the tunnel and still go for our mystic even if she wasnt doing anything at all. It shouldnt be that way and this needs to be fixed as soon as possible. We tried other variations too, with me(templar) casting buffs and stuff, same result, they would ignore everyone in party and go straight for the mystic anyway. They said they fixed part of it but the difference is slight to inexistent. From what ive seen so far. And as far as your fighter class go, either way goes. Zerkers still get more DPS than guardians, even though its not as much as it used to be before the expansion. Guardians still are the masters at being meatshields though. So if your friend really wants to be a mystic, then go for it, you will have very interesting moments in the game, but be ready to taunt like crazy...

OK. If he wants to play a Shaman, then that is exactly what he should do. One of the best things about EQ2 is that the classes are so well balanced that your choice can be based because of personal style and not in spite of it. What is the right choice for me may well not be the right choice for him, and Norrath can always use another shaman.

I recommend Guardian (and I am not being partial here). Guardians will be able to take more damage. Their DPS is lower, but it is not gonna be a huge difference. If you are duoing with a healer, you will be fine. DPS is great, but if you aren't alive long enough to dish it out, it's kinda worthless, wouldn't ya say?

Now if you want to add DPS, drop the fighter and pick up a Mage or Scout. You will definately be able to drop mobs fast.

And there is no need to have a fighter to taunt. If the healer gets agro, then he just heals himself while the Scout uses his back attacks for maximum damage. :)
