Advice for a true newb? Say bye-bye to your social life from now on ;) As for real advice on how to be an EQ2 ranger, I can't help you there since I just started 2 (Still playing 1 as a cleric & ranger). Very different games, maybe joining a family guild can help you out?? [Family guilds take all lvls & classes] I thought if you had a reply to your post it might start some conversation in this thread.
As a ranger learn how to kite. Kiting a mob is when you pull with bow, snare, run backwards while shooting, loot when dead. Very good while soloing, and if you add a nuker or 2 (mage, wizzy, even cleric) you can kill quite fast.

This is no longer an option. As of LU#13, we can no longer shoot while moving.

As far as my suggestions for playing a ranger;

Always dual wield - a pair of fast weapons will give you more chances per fight to trigger poison procs. And imbued weapons will proc on their own for even more damage so having two of them is twice as good!

Always use poison - it's "free" damage, why would you ever want to kill a mob more slowly!

Keep your skills maxed - it's very important for you to always be "at your best". Along with this, always upgrade your new combat abilities to at least adept 1 level as soon as you can afford to. they always do much more damage than the training versions

Know your mob and pick your fights - since you can't heal yourself, you never want to take on mobs that hit harder and/or faster than you do.

IMHO - rangers are one of the most soloable sub-classes in the game. Post LU#13, they seem to do even better at it!

Welcome to EQ2 and good luck ranger!

another helpful question for him, and me for that matter, if someone can anser it....would it be more beneficial to a scout, for whatever class (i'm thinking of swashbuckler for myself) to be able to go up the crafting line making our own spell upgrades, or would it be smarter to do alchemy and make our own poisons?

Since LU 13 you can still shoot regular shots with your bow(i do it all the time) you just can't use any skills while moving.

so my "kiting" routine is:

1)use my range attack skills with slow enemy,(slows enemy 40%)

2)initiate range attack(usually while my slow debuff skill is preparing)

3)2/3 more bow skills(triple shot,fire arrows usually).

4)Start walking backwards with ranged attack still on. Switch to melee once mobs gets close and initiate HO's. Stun, jump or walk around the mob, shrouded strike(hit+invis), then shadow lunge for teh kill!(if not dead then I back up some and use another bow proc while mob is stunned)

I can easily whipe out solo mobs up to yellow(no arrows-ups)With my bow procs+poison and DOt on my bow skills, most mobs white and down are at 25% and less health before getting into melee range of me...any spellcasters are massacred if they stop to cast magic on me.

hope this helps,
Berj.

You will go through a lot of poisons, so it may be to your benefit to make your own.

Remember that crafting is a time sink just like adventuring, so to always use poisons that are matched with your level, you will need to gain tradeskill exp (by making stuff) and keep your artisan level almost as high.

Since new spells come at every level, you might want to just buy them from the broker. Your most important initial upgrade will be to an Adept 1 level, and those are loot drops, not crafted. There are other full-time crafters that can make them at Apprentice II-IV and Adept III (most expensive).

If you can get into a guild, they will most likely have a few full-time artisans that can support your needs.
