Managing Your House - More Inv SlotsFollow

#1 Jul 28 2005 at 1:15 PM Rating: Decent
I'm new to EQII, used to play FFXI. I'm not sure I fully understand (actually, I know I don't) the purpose of the apartment/inn room. I'm paying 5s every 168 game hours for 2 storage slots? I can add furniture to reduce this cost, but does it add more storage? Also, it's seems I can pay a large sum of money to have one or more of the walls re-done in a nicer wood; this I guess would be nice aesthetically, what game benefit is there? And who spends time in their room? Maybe I'm fundamentally missing the picture.

So far, I'm loving EQII, but the apartment thing is beyond me.

Put backpacks or boxes in those 2 slots to open up even more available space. In fact, two 24-slot boxes can make...well...a lot of storage. Those slots are also used when you put items up for sale.

Just make sure you purchase a bulletin board first, avaiable from many vendors, and mount it in your room. That will allow you to sell items in your personal (body) inventory while in your room, and the items in your room vault when you are out.

Those vault items will remain for sale up to 24 hours after you log off. Once you log back in, the timer is reset.

Always nice to enter the room and hear a little cha-ching from a sale while I was away. :)

No real benefit I know of for the wallpaper, but there are many folks that enjoy decking out their rooms with all kinds of items, and calling it home. Makes for a little better experience than always going to sit in a corner of the city to "go to sleep".

There are also pets you can either buy or obtain through quests that can live in your room. I have two little boars with flaming eyes that wander around my room. Got them from the group arena in Splitpaw.

You can buy better rooms for more money and status points, but they are more expensive to upkeep. A guildmate of mine has a 2-bedroom place in Qeynos Harbor with extra beds, furniture, rugs, art, a desk with all his collection quest awards, and his Heritage Quest reward items are mounted neatly on another wall. I sometimes use his house as a log-off spot. No real benefit, just for fun.

A while ago our guild held a meeting at another 2-room house. The owner made sure it was clean, the pets were fed, and our Provisioner brought food and drinks. It was hilarious to watch everyone ham it up for the guild screen-shot. The Ratonga made quite an effort to leap on top of the wall sconce, and I got busted for jumping on the bed.

Lastly, 5s seems like a lot now, but over time you will make 10 times that from loot on with a single kill. Until then, you can do several quests to get items for your room.

Have fun!

The 2 inventory slots are easy to work around put a couple of chests in the slots so you can hold more. 2 can become 50 easy.

Houses are an option, and for the most part is just what you decide to do with them. You dont need to do anything with it, but others can see it when you auction stuff from your apartment.

OK, I'll take a stab at this...

You're paying 5s every week for 2 additional bank slots and a place to hang your hat... or whatever other stuff you manage to collect as you go about your adventuring life.

The furniture that you use to reduce cost, reduces status cost which is a component of the more expensive housing. There is no status cost attached to a basic apartment so no savings there.

No, you don't get more slots no matter what you do and even the larger more expensive houses only have 2 slots. But, remember that you can put a 24 slot box in each slot and that would give you almost 50 slots from which to sell your stuff.

The cost of re-doing the walls or floor isn't a lot of money, (iirc), not more than a couple copper... and just makes the place look a bit different.

Now, why would you do all this? For me, my apartment is another interesting aspect to an already rich and detailed game. I enjoyed furnishing the place and making it look "lived in".

As far as how much time I spend there, I don't hang out there... but since we sell from our rooms, (buy a merchant board and hang it on the wall - this gives you access to the market), I do go there often. Even if it's just to collect my income and put more merchandise up for sale.

Early on, I thought I might become a carpenter, (I didn't), and that I would use the apartment as a showroom of what I made and had for sale...

(WOW! You 2 guys are fast! Those posts both went up while I was typing this one!)

I have a lovely little one room apartment in Willow Wood. I just enjoy decorating it with purchased, tradeskill, and reward items. I, like Blue, thought about being a carpenter but ended up doing other tradeskills. Fortunately for me my niece is a carpenter and is know as the "furniture fairy" in our guild. I am amazed at the creativity behind her visits. I now have a very awesome looking fireplace.

I visit my apartment every day to reset my timer and hear the "cha ching" of my fortune increasing. You would be amazed at what can be sold from your apartment. I agree with Blue that it is just an extension of the wonderful graphics of the game.

I have a somewhat on/off topic question about rooms. Since I betrayed Freeport, (34 dark elf monk now) I haven't been able to get a room to sell from and no matter how hard I try, I always get kicked out of Longshadow Alley before I can close out my old apartment. I've tried invis, speed buffs and different shapes but no matter what the guard always gets me. Any suggestions?

You really needed to let go of the old place before you left town. I don't know of any way for you to get back there for long enough to get it done. However, I have heard many stories of folks attending parties in the "wrong" town so it must be doable.

Check, (and search), the SOE boards in the threads that deal with housing. I'll bet they have some suggestions.

To the Traitor of Freeport:

Not all the guard NPCs will 'kick' you out. Some will jsut follow you around and make angry faces. There's at least one wandering guard and of course the ones by the gates.

The best bet is to emerge from the Down Below and make a dash for it. Would be a lot easier if you can get a friend to sort of tell you if it's safe or not as the wanderers.. wander past that spot pretty frequently. Hence, your getting caught all the time.

----------

To the (former?) FFXI:

Only those two slots [BUT... you can put containers in there] in your inn room for now.

The decorations or refurbishing you can put in your room does not affect your stats/etc like it can in FFXI. So it's mainly for looks.. for the moment. I 'hear' there are plans to change this. Well SE and SOE are partners after all and a lot of EQ2 JP users are from FFXI too.

In FFXI, you basically had two containers in toto. One on your character [gobbie bag/etc] and one in your room [I don't count that 'furniture' here since that any 'extra' slots is effectively cancelled out when you can only access it from your home].

In EQ2, besides the bank [accessible city-wide] and the slots in your inn room, there's also the ability to put up more than 7 items for off-line auction. [At this time, two teak boxes gives you 48 slots] You also have a mailbox with a lot more than 8 boxes in it.

*boxes tend to have a lot more slots and are cheaper then backpacks. They also weigh about 100 and usually don't have any 'weight reduction' feature.

**The AH's fee is 20% [40% if the buyer's from a diff city] on the selling price and not the flat fees in FFXI but people can buypass that if you're doing online selling from your house and they take the trouble to visit you at home [you'll be in merchant mode and they see you like any other NPC merchant]. That used to be a good reason to 'dress' up the room but I hardly see anyone doing online selling anymore. With 6 slots on your person and 2 from the room vault, that's 8 x 24 slots for selling though.
