Summoners, the ultimate puller class?Follow

#1 Jul 03 2005 at 12:14 AM Rating: Decent
I've noticed that the spells gained between lvls 11 and lvl 19 are perfect for pulling mobs out of groups (singles out of groups)

I just do this for fun, but I don't know if anyone else does it.

just cast Invisibility on yourself, then run into a group of single mobs, then target one, but don't engage, then retreat to a safe diffence. Once you are a safe distance from the pack of mobs, have your pet attack the targeted mob, then as soon as he engages, pull him back. As soon as your pet gets back to you, have it attack the monster again. Then, you can just sit back and heal your pet while he bashes the monster(this is assuming he can do so).

I'm lvl 18 and I can take out lvl 20 heroic wolves in the antonicas with this technique, so I know it works somewhat.

The key to survival is to have as little agro as possible.

You can pull groups of mobs using this technique:

Target: a group of 3 gnolls.

1. Buff up the pet and yourself. NEVER buff during combat!
2. At a long distance, target one of the gnolls, pet-attack.
3. As soon as pet lands damage, target another gnoll in the group and pet-attack. The other 2 are now running to you.
4. Once the second gnoll turns on pet, target and pet-attack last gnoll. You will probably be getting hit by now, and the first 2 gnolls are agro'd on the pet. Unless you will die, stay put.
5. Don't cast any spells at this last gnoll. Wait for the pet damage to pull the agro off you.

Now you have all 3 gnolls agro'd on the pet, not you.

Target the pet and start casting spells. Pets have a nice ability to quickly target the next mob that is attacking it, so just follow it's targeting.

If you pull agro, either pet-attack to try to loose the agro, or unleash all your spells and quickly burn it to the ground.

Watch pet health and make sure you don't out-damage it.

This also works with multiple solo mobs, or even multiple groups. As long as the pet can stay alive and draw agro, you are safe.

Last note: pet heals draw agro, so use sparingly.

This does not work at higher levels, at least it does not for me. I can SOMETIMEs solo a group of green heroics, but normally either I get agression, or pet dies (and of course in either case I die shortly there after). This is useing Adept 3 tellurian veteran, Vexation Adept 1, Agitation Adept 1, Vehmont Stone Master 1, and Blazing Presence Adept 3. Of course I have adept 1 fire proc and adept 1 DS. I wish I had been a paladin, however my exp with eq1 made me feel a pet class would be the better soloer. Boy was I wrong :/

Fronglo, make sure you don't cast Flameshield DS on you. It does heat damage back, thereby increasing hate and agro.

I do not take on Heroics either, but I don't really need to. There are so many other non-heroic mobs around, it works out. You may need to kill more of them to equal 1 heroic, but that's how the class works (paper-thin armor, low HP). Of course I haven't gotten to the raid levels, so those mobs may be different. Everything in PF is ^^ (see comment below).

And a ^^ mob? Forget about it. It would take me so long to whittle down it's mega-hit points, and the Earth pet can't take that kind of a beating. In the same amount of time I can go kill 5+ solo's. I learned long ago to leave the ^^'s to someone else or get it in a group.

If I wanted to be able to be able to stand toe-to-toe with a huge critter and duke it out like Rock'em Sock'em Robots, then a tank would have been a better choice. But I to play a Conjurer because I like being a Conjurer. Spells, pet, DPS, all that.

Maybe the next expansion will have a new set of mobs for us. It would be frustrating if EVERY mob at level 50 is ^^.

my mage regularly solos heroic ^^'s with no problem, get an adept 3 soldier or even the hero train choice at lvl 20. Currently a 27 conj and I solo the giants/gnolls with no problem at all. Just keep pet healed, and load on the dots. It also helps if you have a nice essence shift (mine is adept3) and if you work it right, can cast that on pet for mana and cast some heals while still ending up with more mana than before you cast either.

I use the strategy of sick pet, shatter, static, bludgeon (keeping those all stacked) and heal when needed. If I run low on mana I essence shift pet while healing (petrify helps with this a lot if your pet can't take hits too well, nice stun) and mobs go down fairly fast with lots of exp.

I'm not sure what it's like for lvl 30+mobs in higher zones, but at least up to my lvl and probably a few above, this tactic seems to work out well.

You just got to figure out what works best for you considering your spells that you have and what versions of them you have to know what to kill for the most exp.

I have also found out that a duo with another conj or necro can yeild great results. I like to group with a RL conj friend of mine and go into the rumbler instance zone (heroic version, not solo) and we do fine. With both of us taking on giants or gnolls in TS, we can duo the crater mobs with no deaths and very fast exp. You need to have great communication and teamwork to do this well, but it does pay off.

Some correction:

1. Buff up the pet and yourself. NEVER buff during combat!

If you are 25++ necromancer (summoner), casting Boon of Lifeless (pet proc and hate buff) spell during combat is the key to taking down either a group of 3-6 mobs. I believe a conjuror has a similar spell. Since I don't play a conjuror, so not sure if it works the same.

Here is what I do in taking down 5 blues(level 29) at level 30. At a safe spot, send pet to the nearest mob. 4 will run to you. Quickly retarget one of the 4 and send pet on it. Now, 3 mobs will be beating on you and 2 on pet. Cast Boon of Lifeless once or twice, the 3 on you will turn to pet. Retarget any of the 3 and send pet to attack it. Cast dogs/rats and dots. When the mob is in red. Retarget any 2 of the undamaged mobs and send pet to attack it. Dot and unload HO on it. If the remaining undamaged mob turn to you, cast boon of lifeless again. After the 2 mobs gone down, target the undamaged mob, send pet and wait until 80% before unloading nuke and HO. If you get AE HO, do not complete it. Most important is to know which are healer, nuker and meleer. Kill healer, then nuker and lastly meleer. The trick is to kill all mobs except 2 before needing to heal the pet. Usually end the fight with pet in orange or red. While I'm at 70%hp and 30% power. This however, won't work with heroic group mobs. Pet dies too fast.

Also if you have a heal over time buff it can pull aggro to you. If you notice in the battle log when your pet is healed by the buff, it says YOU healed....etc

So make suer your pet gets decent aggro on each mob, it may take a couple of rotations through all of them, otherwise halfway through the fight they'll aggro onto you while you are just standing there.

To update my above post, I now solo green ^^ mobs in Lavastorm.

After buffing pet, I pet-attack then only use pet-heals. Once mob is OOM, I burn it down with DOT's and HO's using Word of Force (Splitpaw spell). If the fight is going better than expected, I'll throw in some mitigation spells to help the pet land damage.

Heroic Group mobs still whip my Erudite tush, I can take on 3 about 60% of the time.

All spells are Adept 1 except Pet and Essense Shift which are Adept 3.

Why is buffing during combat so bad? Two people now have said "NEVER buff during combat".

Buffing generates hate against the mobs you are fighting. Mobs have a "hate list" they follow based on a super-secret formula, and there are certain things that will add or subtract from your "total hate" that will slide you up or down the list.

Heal spells also cause agro, including pet-heal.

Some buffs produce enough agro to instantly turn the mob on you. Blazing Presence (Conjurer 49.6) almost always draws agro from the mob, no matter how much other-than-me hate there is. I ensure that's been refreshed before fighting.

Fighters are bred to take a beating, so they have skills that generate increased hate against the target. That keeps mages with tissue-thin armor alive.
