Monks, what are they like?Follow

#1 Apr 16 2005 at 12:09 PM Rating: Decent
I'm getting eq2 soon, and I'm not sure which class to be, normally im a mage (a CC'er) but i want to try something differrent.

So im thinking of becoming a Monk, but are they any fun to play?, and are they good enough at soloing, while being useful in groups?

In many of the forums, monks sound interesting and good solo'ers, but they seem to have many problems.

So i ask you, will i truely enjoy playing this class?

There's only one person who can answer that question Smiley: grin

But I can tell you that monks look really cool and have high DPS. Always welcome in groups. I think they can solo ok because they kill quickly but the balance to that is they also take damage more than other tanking classes.

Hopefully a monk player can give you some answers.

I am currently a level 42 monk on the Blackburrow server. I can routinly get 140+ DPS when I am not tanking. When I am tanking I have around 80% avoidance and 50% mitigation. I have a skill that allows me to have around 70% mitigation for approx. 30 seconds. I never lose aggro on single mobs and I very rarely lose aggro on multi-enemy encounters. This is mainly due to my Adept 3 AoE taunt and Adept 1 AoE attack, but we can still hold intense aggro without. I also know people say berzerkers are the aggro kings. I trio with a berzerker friend of mine and we both go all out every fight. Even so, whichever of us is tanking at the time holds it no problem. When it comes to epic raids, anything above epicx2 should be left to the plate classes. Anything lower and we monks can do quite good, far better than most posts seem to think. Flame me all you want, but I am a perosn who would actually know. I have done these things myself.

Thanks for that.

Do you think that a grand majority of point should be put into agility?
#6 Apr 22 2005 at 4:17 PM Rating: Decent
I pump up strength as high as I can go, due to the fact that most gear with strength has ok agility as well. Stamina is a close third. Armor class means nothing, we have skills to boost that up to obscene levels anyways. If I was wearing high AC gear, I would easily beat out any plate wearers during my buffs durations by 20%+.

Strength -> Agility -> Stamina -> AC

Ask me any question you like and I can awnser it fully, I am tired of seeing people not play monks due to a lack of help and enthusiasm.

ok, what are the animations like, and the fist's ones.

and also, which type of weapon do you use? are fists any useful?
#8 Apr 23 2005 at 10:09 AM Rating: Decent
i went gaurdian and my friend went monk, monks own, they take way less hits and they do way more damage.
#9 Apr 23 2005 at 12:53 PM Rating: Decent
Animations are very kungfuish. Think of Jet Li and you can get a close idea. For weapons, all depends on stats and damage rating. No one type of weapon is better. 2handers are almost always better for going pure DPS and dual wield is usually better for tanking.
#10 Apr 24 2005 at 1:18 PM Rating: Decent
so are fists out of the equation?
#11 Apr 24 2005 at 2:38 PM Rating: Decent
Before level 10, bare fists are your best weapons as well as your cheapest. After 10, it is better for you to get actual weapons. If you are looking for the bare fist animations however, there are fistwraps and other hand to hand weapons that give the same animations. I at level 42 still have the same normal attack animations as I did when I was lvl 8 without a weapon.

you should use a wepon with monks before level 10 if your going to after, just so you can get the skill up.

Two handers = staffs and most large hammers
Dual Wield = batons, longer staffs that are about waist high each, fistwraps, some things that kinda look like brass knuckles, and lastly some other fancy weapons with 3 blades sticking out of the front of it (just like the assassins in Diablo 2)

Kagimen: you should use a wepon with monks before level 10 if your going to after, just so you can get the skill up.

The bare fists level up crushing, which is pretty much all you ever use unless you get exotic with the dual wields.

All the post about Monks here are good save that depending on what race you choose. People call me crazy for my Troll Monk on Befallen Server, but I find that as a Troll Monk "Acroyear" has all around average physical stats(all around 65'ish) than other monks. Sure he's only 24, avoidance of 66.6%, not sure mitigation, but when I look at my HPs of 1165 I find with my HPs I last longer than most monks.

Here's where the some arguements occur:

1) What Weapons to use: I am currently using Fistwraps(less damage per hit but hit more often, batons hit for more but are slower(being a troll I have crushing damage bonus). My Slashing and Piercing are so low its sad.

2) Offensive or Defensive Buffs: Soloing without a healer use defensive buffs as offensive buff is a 5% proc to stun.

3) What Race to choose: Troll Monks are rare but Troll Bruisers are extrememly common. I see plenty of smaller race Monks but the damage output is alot smaller than a strong Big Race.

Best to ask people in game by doing a > /who all Monk 40 50 < and asking them in game to answer a few questions.

Race means absolutely nothing late game, but prior to... let's say 30, race does have an effect. Three cheers for the troll monk! I chose half elf because I just prefer that look. Also, you can expect to get between 65% - 80% unbuffed avoidance, all the way from lvl 20 - 50. Agility does affect it largely, but isnce it IS a percent, the large jumps aren't as noticable.

1) Said in previous posts.

2) Before you get Dragon's Stance, always use your defensive buff to solo, since the offensive buff blows wang. Once you get Dragon's Stance, use that when soloing. It is a direct increase to your offensive skills and well worth it. I found a Master 1 Dragon's Stance 3 days after getting the skill, nothing beats it mwahahaha.

3) To be completely and totally honest, choose whatever race you think looks pimpest. I know a lvl 50 Ratonga Monk, has around 160 stamina unbuffed. Late game, race is null.

By the way, anyone who thinks we suck at tanking (I just wanna rub this in), I tanked last night in a trio fighting white ^^'s. Guess what, still averaging 120 DPS with my defensive buffs up and the priest was barely using any power. Was 40 Mystic, 38 Swashie, and me (42 Monk). Just think about the sheer awesomeness.

Just remember, enjoy your monk while you can. We are so overpowered, we will get thwacked by that nerf bat one day. =D

there is a little link for you monk brusies out there thinking maybe you can't tank.. that is a 26 bruiser with a lvl 30 dbl up group mob and tanked it just fine... he was even tanking the lvl 31 and 32 dbl up mobs.. only one healer that was a fury.. so that is what 6 levels above red group and dbl up... we can tank just fine..

Group aggro... we only have one aoe taunt.. and even our aoe abilities are lacking.. once you get 3 or more mobs going.. keeping aggro for a monk gets much much harder..

As for what else.. really deep red mobs like raid mobs and high level named mobs pretty much just rip monks to shreads.. you don't dodge most of the hits and your migration is low so when you get hit... ouchy... so fights that are going to last 10 to 30 mins that you can't manage to take the hits from are a no no..

just a correction, you do better faster damage using a weapon up until level 10.... plus with a bare hand you are using a 1 hand weapon (only 1 hand swings) in order to duel wield you have to have a duel wield weapon, or fist wraps.... before level 10 anyway you can use any weapon type around too so take advantage of that to get best weapon you can to make those levels go faster. Once you get level 10 and choose brawler though always have either fist wraps, duel wield clubs, or other such weapons equipped... not only because if nothing in hand you only swing 1 hand, but also for the additional stats that weapons provide.

OK I just started a Froglock. Gonna betray and go Bruiser with him. However I went to go pick up a couple of duel wield weapons the other day and it said I couldn't equip them. I know I can cause they were yellow to me. He's lvl 10 now and was 9 at the time. Now I thought that all fighters could duel wield right off the bat. Am I wrong? And if so when can I duel wield? Thanks. =)

Xanril,

Monks are great..however...the opposite of a monk is Bruiser.
Consider a Bruiser a Monk on steriods..a Bruiser's main function is to do major damage.
They might not have the avoidance that Monks do but Bruisers are pretty good nonetheless at avoidance.
Bruisers are evil Monks.

Just to offer you more options..you dont have to be a Monk..you can also be a Bruiser.

Bruiser: Bruisers are powerful thugs who use raw physical force to pummel their opponents into submission. They have transformed their bodies into brutal weapons designed to inflict suffering upon their enemies.

Monk: Monks are disciplined combatants who specialize in the martial arts. Their natural agility allows them to avoid their enemy's blows and strike back with clean efficient counterattacks.
