Ok, so I've got a Gateway 700S, and I'll never buy another computer from Gateway or Dell or any of them, but it's what I'm stuck with at the moment...

I've got 512MB at the moment and the consensus is that 1Gb total is the way to go, but of course Kingston and Crucial don't sell RAMBUS (from what I can tell, at least not for my system)...

I call Gateway and they want to charge me ~$330 for a couple modules of 256MB or ~$530 for a pair of 512MB...This is more than I was planning on spending...

Do I have any other options?

You can check at Best Buy, Circuit City.. Or you can buy on the internet IF you know how to install it and IF your guaranty expired. If not call Gateway and ask them who can install it for you so you wont lose your guaranty.

List of pages that you might find it a better price:

www.memorysuppliers.com

Good luck.

I had a hard time finding this memory also.
The prices for Rambus seem to keep getting higher, so i went ahead and bought 2 sticks of 512 (1.5 gigs total now), bought mine at http://www.memory4less.com/
EQ2 runs much much better--zoning from about 1 minute to about 10 seconds.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies...

What is RIMM? and PC800? Will that affect whether or not it will work in my system?

Seems the cheapest I see it for is about $180, which is considerably cheaper than what Gateway is offering, but you can get a gig of DDR for cheaper than that, so it still stings...

Someone on another board suggested it wasn't really worth upgrading, and I kind of agree, because once I add another pair, I won't be able to add anymore and I'll be maxed out at a gig, which I'll probably want to upgrade before long, so I'm considering saving my money and building a new system...

Problem is I don't really know much about computers...I've read that it's not that tough to build your own system, but where would I find which components are best? and how to put them together, and what components I need, etc. etc...?

And how much, ball-park, would it cost to build a new system say ~3ghz, mid-high graphics card, 1-2 gig RAM?

To build your own system you will need:

1.- Case.
2.- MotherBoard.(Comes with Cables and Manual).
3.- CPU.(BE VERY CAREFULL WITH THIS).
4.- Memory Ram.(NO INSTRUCTION TO INSTALL IT BUT IS A PIECE OF CAKE)
5.- Video Card.(USE YOUR AGP SLOT, EASY TO INSTALL).
6.- CD Writer or DVD Writer. (EASY TO INSTAL, You might need to buy cables).
7.- Cables (IF NEed IT).
8.- Floppy.
9.- Sound Card IF YOU WANT.
10.- Hard Drive.
11.- WINDOWS XP Or whatever operative system you want.
