What exactly is Raiding?

I am new to the EQ way so please explain raiding and why it is beneficial. I can only assume it helps to get items and loot. But is there more to it?

In FFXI terms, a RAID is a Promivyon run, or a Dynamus run. Anything that takes more than one group to do and therefore has greater rewards.

I believe the max raid size in EQ is 24 people; or 4 groups. You can also "raid" a dungeon where you go in and kill till you get to the boss at the end, taking all the treasure with you and your group, so I guess it's not exactly limited to more than one group, but in most contexts, it is.
