I started playing EQ2 yesterday and I chose a wood elf fighter. Now i know Fighter is not the best job for wood elves but this is EQ and the characters are all equally balanced. Wood elves especially make it up in the agility department. I was just wonderin if anyone else is tryin out a class that might be a challenge, or if ppl just think it wont work.

Race has little to none effect on your character. It may hinder his power slightly at the beginning of the game, but as you get gear and progress that hinderage will be non existant.

I just came from playing FF which characters are able to play any class but only certain characters can play them effectively. Thats why i love EQ so much, th fact that you truly can be anyone and anything

You can play a Troll Enchanter or a Gnome Brawler. Race literally has zero effect past, say, level 10.

The greatest thing (to me) about FFXI is the fact that race means a lot. In EQ, itemization really ruins any uniqueness and challenge the game should have. AAs further broke down any remaining difference. Race really has no meaning whatsoever, which it should. Do you think a Gnome should be able to tank as well as an Ogre? I sure don't. But the line between races kept thinning with each expansion until it was completely obliterated.

So that said, you think a Taru should be able to tank like a Galka? Or a Galka nuke as much as a Taru? Each race should have it's own specialties, and while you'll get tons of cookie-cutter players, you'll get others who want the added challenge.

As a Hume player, I'm doomed to mediocrity ability-wise, so I have to make my self stand out in skill so that I get picked over the specialized races. And I have no problem with this at all, it's how I chose to play the game. I'll take a well-played non-optimal character over a lazy specialized one anyday.

I can't count the number of times I've seen Taru BLMs eat dirt because they just can't get the concept of aggro control through their thick heads. Also the number of times I've seen Galka and Elvaan tanks that are unable to hold hate. Really, though race makes a difference in ability, the skill of the players is by far the greater measure of the party's success.

I agree that having certain races specialise at certain classes is on the whole, usually a good idea. But I think FFXI took it too far. Just because you wanted to be say, a Galkan mage or maybe a Taru tank, partys would just not take you seriously, and I think that's wrong. You say the way EQ works ruins the uniqieness, but I think FFXI does. I mean, sure you're better at certain jobs if you pick a certain race in FFXI, but everyone does, so you're really not unique. At least the way EQ does things, you may well be about level par with a class as another race, but you become unique because of your achievements, not your stat advantage.

Well it is just a fantasy game like any other so the possibilities shoud be endless. I do agree however, that perhaps some classes should be better suited for specific races. But better suited does not mean that class only. As it were in FFXl, a taru warrior was unheard of.. and as was mentioned in the post before this, they wouldnt be taken seriously. I remember x-ping in the canyon with my Hume DRK and having a galka blm. Noone took him seriously in fact they kept /tell-ing the rest of the party how bad he sucked... which wasnt far from the truth i mean 2 spells and he had to rest. I believe thats to extreme so on that note id rather have the EQ method of be who you want and be what you want.

Yes, I know that Taru melee and Galka / Elvaan mages get overlooked easily and even derided. That's because 90% of the FFXI population are ignorant f***stains who have no capacity for individual thought, 5% are arrogant elitists and pound their thought patterns into the afore-mentioned 90%, and then the final 5% are the actual decent players. I love the game, but hate the playerbase and so I have to go around and hunt out the decent people.

It would be rather silly to have different classes and races only to have it mean nothing but a different look in the end. I'm sure it has to have some sort of effect past lvl 10. That would just be silly.

But since I have yet to play multiple characters past any lvl, then I can not say for sure..

It wont be completely "balanced" out for quite sometime. It was easy in EQlive to max stats and such, due to the items being GOD-LIKE. In EQ2 there is going to be a difference due to it being so new and no uber duber luber items yet. That STA difference for a fighter is gonna show between a Ogre and a gnome. Sorry, but its true.

Oh, I agree. But I think what most people are pointing out with EQ2 is that, yes there is a stat difference, so some races would naturally more suited to certain classes, but the difference doesn't amount to much. I like that, it means it won't get like FFXI, where no one will party with you if you're not an ideal combination.
