What is the thing with spells in EQ II for the mage archetype?

I heard you get at every level a type I spell for free and you can upgrade it to better damage, mind control etc. etc.

Can that upgrading be done in the same level or do you have to level to be able to upgrade a spell and how do you upgrade a spell?

Different spell levels in EQ2 can be used at any level but recomended that you progress some before using them because the higher level the spell the more power it uses to cast them.
Types of spells

Apprentice I - received when you reach certain levels

Apprentice II- purchased off of the NPC Vendors

Apprentice III- Made via tradeskills

Adept I - Dropped off of mobs

Adept II - quested spells

Adept III - Made via Tradeskills

Master I - quested (not sure if they are droped)

There suppose to be Master II and III but have no info on those.

Spells and abilities have recommended levels that is based off your skills for that spell. If you mouse over the spell it should be color coded to your level, i.e. green, blue, white so on. You want your spells to be white or blue, you can use spells that are higher like yellow and orange but the spells would proably expend all your power before you ended the encounter with the mobs.

There are nine levelsd to almost each spell. Some spells, like your shielding spell, do not have levels.

These levels are:
Apprentice I
Apprentice II
Apprentice III
Adept I
Adept II
Adept III
Master I
Master II
Master III

When you aqquire enough Experience (It doesn't have to b e a level, just enough real experience) You will get AppI of the spell. If you happen to have it on hand (Doubt you will) You could technically scribe Master III right when you leveled.

App II can be bought at a scribe vendor in most towns.

I guess my question is can you skip levels upgrading say go from Apprentice 1 to Apprentice 3. Could help save on some needed money.

Yes. I went from app1 to app3. App3 spells sell for about
4-5 sp on my server.

Also one of the biggest advantages of app3 spells is the combat wheel. My most powerful spell was my fire burst, however, most of the time in order to keep the chain running I need to use lightning. I noticed a big difference in my damage output with app3 lightning as opposed to app1

There are actually FOUR tiers in each catagory, and they act as modifiers for your casting level.

Apprentice I (level -1)
Apprentice II (level +0)
Apprentice III (level +1)
Apprentice IV (level +2)
Adept I (level +3)

and so forth.

The "IV"s aren't in the game yet, but they will be added eventually.

I'm having trouble understanding exactly how this system works.

Right now I'm a level 9 mage. I bought the App.II single target lightning spell, arcane chains, and static pulse.

At what level should I upgrade to the App.III or Adept spells?

Upgrade as soon as you can. There's no reason to wait, if you can find/buy/create the upgrades.
