Cause it's the age of DLC. Companies know a lot of gamers will blow their cash on anything no matter how much of a scam it actually is, so they charge for it.

I kind of hate to say it but this is starting too look true..
I am a older gamer, I have 4 classic full size coin op arcade games in one room.. I used to have a lot more but recently sold some.
We used to game and we had multiple systems but now it is Xbox vs PS vc PC.. People are loyal too, it dont matter how bad or how wrong they stick by just like in politics.
Like COD even though it is nothing but a map pack almost every time people will still buy COD 782.
What frustrates me is game companies trying to tell me what I like to play and not giving me what I want. Some CEO who has never played a game or in Microsoft case someone who was in development of Office.

What happened to imagination? Wanting something to be different? Wanting to play something different..What happened to taking a chance? What happened to having an open mind?
You know it is happening everywhere even in the movies. It is this heard mentality or everyone seems to have to defend what they are playing?
Nothing in this worlds is perfect and nothing can not be improved on.

Easily remedied by even SE's own config menu. We've been able to adjust the aspect ratio for years now and you don't even have to leave the game to do it. If you open the actual configuration utility you can opt for uncompressed textures with better background resolution as well. If you want to make the game look current you can, it's just a matter of trying. There are people running this game in 4k with increased draw distance, updated icons and fonts, unlocked framerate, ect.

Never mind all the other tweaks you can make, the FPS unlocking alone is enough to make the game feel new. The first login after making this change I think I stared at the moogle in my mog house in awe of how fluidly he floated up and down. Remember how bad the wing flutter of flies and bees is? Gone. Mithra tail wag is literally hypnotic. Lighting effects, running water and waterfalls... don't even get me started on those floating flowers in La Thiene.

The only reason to complain about how the game looks is that you're playing on a console, but that will all be gone soon.

Graphics are the least of XI's problems. It's one of the best looking MMOs out there, even now, imo.

Didn't running the game at more than 5 fps get people banned for speedhacking a while back? Did they fix it so that's not a thing now?

You have to think of the normal 30 FPS frame rate differently here. Instead of a game that was only animated to run at 30 FPS, you have a game animated at 60 FPS that only displays every other frame of animation. Essentially what you're doing by 'unlocking' the frame rate is allowing those previously removed frames to display. You're not running 30 frames at twice the speed.

Let's say you took a 60 page flip book and flipped through it in 1 second. Now go through and tear out every even numbered page(30 pages) and flip through it again in 1 second. The book will show the same thing happening in the same amount of time, just that you have more frames of animation to process.

In most of today's games things happen so fast that your brain(our brains, not specifically yours) don't have enough time to process all the information we're receiving anyway. That's why a lot of people will say "Oh, there's really no difference between 30 and 60 FPS". Most people go to youtube and look at a side by side comparison of a racing game with a car zipping past things at 120 MPH. Of course they're not going to notice a difference. If you're someone who picks up on the details rather than just the broad scope of what you're looking at then you'd spot it immediately.

I completely understand SE's motive in presenting this game on console, but the things that had to be adjusted or even omitted completely from the game for that reason is borderline tragic. Especially when you consider how important the smaller details are to immersive games such as these.

Anyway, if anyone would like to know how it's done feel free to PM me.

Once console support is completely done, I wonder if they'll go ahead and unlock the FPS. It's easily the biggest change you can do to make the game feel and look 10x better. I doubt SE will ban people for using it, since I'm sure just about anyone on PC is using it.

As for the community, ya XI is good simply because most servers had dwindled down so you have very few people do accomplish things with. That means if you're a jerk, you're not accomplishing a whole heck of alot. So most people are very welcoming to most players once you want to try some end game out. The game feels even more casual than XIV at this point since if you're on, people will take you, if not, meh.

Which is something I don't mind because despite being more casual...it still feels like there's plenty for me to do that's relevant that isn't forcing me into obsolete content...yet again.

Matsui sounds like they have a plan for after console support is dropped because given the time frame, they can more than get XI's core swapped over to rely less on PS2 dev kits and thus further development and all it'll take to resurge numbers is lower the fee or go B2P with a cash shop for vanity/small boosts like GW2 does.

As for unlocking FPS and overclocking, it did speed up XI dramatically which gave the illusion of speedhacking because they designed the game to run at a capped 30 FPS and 56k datastream, so unlocking it "breaks" the limits (much like changing your PC/system clock will automatically kick you from XIV to prevent you speeding up timers and so on.)

They are probably going to lower the fee but I don't think that will be enough to resurge players. Most people don't even play mmos with very slow content updates when they are free. I love FFXI but if it gets slower content and the tablet version tanks like I think it is, the game is going to die slowly.

Now if they gave it a graphical upgrade and went B2P that could work. Or gave it a graphical upgrade one time purchases for each expansion and made it offline with LAN option, that could work too.

I think a graphic update would not help. The game has got to big for the amount of players, To many areas are just empty now. I forget what I was doing but Tesee was watching me and said I ran around for a hour and never saw another person. The game needs to be revitalized, it need to bring people back to old areas. The game needs major upgrades to things like crafting, Crafting absolutely no fun in FFXI and talk about RNG... FFXIV is defiantly a more rounded game in gathering and crafting.

Even if they added new content the game is dieing now. I think there has been a surge of players at least on my server for FFXI and part is FFXIV has had a pretty big exit since Heavensward, part is people are feeling some nostalgia because people know the end is coming. Tesee even brought it up last night, if the end was not coming to FFXI we would probably not be talking about going back.

I think a big problem is the 360, there is a pretty big base of users that are going to have to exit the game, I was talking with one yesterday. A few might get a PC since the software is free really. But allot of people will leave even on the PC if their friends are on the Xbox.

Tesee and I talked about her going back last night but she only knew the 360 and really does not want to buy one to use for a few months.

We are thinking of me leaving FFXIV for a while and keeping her account active so if we decide to go back we still have the house. I still have faith things in FFXIV will change but I am so tired of doing the same thing over and over with no reward. I know MMO's are grinds but the grind has been the same for two and a 1/2 years with no reward. If I was getting something epic for it that would be cool but you get something that is outdated in weeks. But I have been playing since beta and lets face it someone could be exactly where I am in the game in a few months and I have been playing for what almost 2-1/2 years. I think it is cool that they do have a way for people to catch up but that is too soon but We have nothing to show at all for 2-1/2 years, Nothing epic. FFXI problem is it was too hard for new people to pick up and is kind of why it has been dieing for years already, very little new blood, FFXIV is way too easy to catch up..

Tesee who is not even much of a gamer can see what is happening FFXIV.. She was saying it stinks when you bust your butt for something in this game and a month later they just hand it to someone. She was talking about leveling the relic. I think when they ended that and it really was useless after 50 and the same with the lucis.. Why do the work.. She said last night she has know for a while I have been getting frustrated with the game, she said she has been lately too and not had the desire to get on like we used to.. Funny how you like a game so much and short time later it does nothing for you, We even bought 2 PS4 to play and a laptop and now regret it.

We do not totally hate FFXIV though and are still having fun, it is the fun is becoming less and less. How many times can you do the same exact thing before it becomes no fun. I love pizza but if I had to eat it everyday I would be sick of it.. If a game aint continually changing and giving people new thing to do it dies too.. But now this is something FFXI will suffer from too. I dont think people will stick around and pay full price with out something significant to the game.. Adding trials to weapons does not equal new content just like adding 3 more dungeons too FFXIV does.

We do want to back, there are some of the expansions we did not finish in FFXI and Tesee want to finish here empyrean weapon. just do not know the best way to get her on for now..

A server merge would be really good for the game. I'd actually come back if I could find people to do stuff with. Running the old storyline dungeons were some of the best times I've had in an MMO, and that's not just nostalgia talking. I made a new XI account last summer and played a bit with the Reddit LS on Asura. The game is still so much fun.

It is easy to get help there are people really with nothing to do anymore and are just looking to help just to have something to do...
plus they nerfed almost everything and with alter ego's you can do most things yourself. I am getting through the final mission so far no help..
I stopped in-case Tesee wants to do them with me..

I have a bunch of friends on facebook from FFXI and they have friends and so on and so on. We had this huge discussion about FFXI and several still play and allot went back.. I had offers with help just there.

I am going to reply here because I feel what you are going through and wanted to share my thoughts. I think a graphical update would work along with some other tweaks. Right off the back people are more used to modern graphics since the current console gen released. I tried to get my cousin to play with me and he quit after a week. The first thing he said was the game is cool, but looks dated, everything takes too long, and too much stuff to figure out. The only mmo type games he has played is Tera, Destiny, and World Of Warcraft. He is what I would classify as the modern casual gamer. The point I am making here is most of the hardcore type players have either already played through most of the game over years. No matter what SE does, if there is not a desire for a veteran player to start over or revisit older areas, they will not go back. The major overhaul I am suggesting would really be a call to bring in new players and fill the desire of that group that wants to revisit the core, really when I say core, they want the feeling of vanilla FFXI with a new coat of paint and some new trimmings.

So when new people look at FFXI and compare it to FFXIV. They are going to assume FFXIV has better visuals, better combat, better UI, better crafting, more content updates, etc. With these changes they may still think that, but the gap will seem closer. I know many people who won't even touch old FF beneath X because of the dated visuals and systems.

What I am suggesting:

  • HD texture and resolution upgrades
  • New explanatory game introduction for first 5-10 hours
  • New UI and better controls
  • Crafting utilities added to the current crystal/weather/day system
  • Re-Iteration of the fundamental mechanics and characteristics of the elements/renkei/enemies
  • Level Sync type features added throughout all content

And various other changes which I would love to give feedback on if this massive overhaul ever happened. But I think SE already has one foot in and the other out the door. They probably consider the risk too great or the task to daunting to take. Which is why I said if I was them, I would consider the offline B2P package with LAN support if they ever get the point where they are pulling the plug. At least then that could open it up to the modding community which could do those things little by little that they consider too monumental or risky. Skyrim is only about 4 years old and has 100s of mods that improve everything about the game, they even add content. It is insane how much dedication goes into that.

I don't think I would ever truly stop playing FFXI if it went B2P or offline moddable, leisurely. The subscription just requires too much from me since I feel like I have to play to get my moneys worth. I played it for 8 years and played through the majority of content up to the end of Abyssea. One of my favorite games of all time, especially vanilla FFXI.

I agree they already have one foot out the door. I do think we have a better chance of SE making another MMO closer too FFXI and maybe based on FFXI same world.
One thing that may help it or maybe hurt it and it is FFXIV. I feel FFXIV is on a downward spiral now. Tesee opened up her friends list which is huge because she is a girl. Anyway I thought mine was empty. Then she started going through their FC's and it was 0 out 190 on and 0 out of 50 etc. It is to early to call FFXIV dead it certainly is not but it is loosing people pretty good now, at least are not playing. This could either hurt or help the chance of us seeing a new FFXI.

I think the whole thing now about more updates coming too FFXI is because the game has seen a surge from people leaving FFXIV and gong back to FFXI, so right now FFXIV is defiantly helping out.

IF FFXIV were to have major issues it could scare SE though into not ever doing another MMO or it may push them to do one like FFXI.

Yeah that's the thing, XI is currently one of the fasting updating MMOs out, they just sadly can't do MAJOR updates until development is moved to a new platform, but in the letter matsui put out a few days ago they at least stated they'll continue to make "variations" of content which they already do monthly or add onto content - Ras. was an entirely new zone for a mini (free) expansion with some content attached to it, so there's no doubt they'd continue with bigger updates when possible.

If you joined XI now they made things quite easy to get caught up and even ahead which is why some find it more casual than XIV for example. As proven by Grand Master's popularity in Japan..it would likely only tank in America which, while mobile gaming is large...nothing beats the eastern mobile market.

I'm fairly sure they could do graphical updates if they take the time to because XI re-uses a lot of assets, especially wisely, to the point it's actually not THAT much work to do once they drop console support because the game itself already downsizes a lot of textures as does FFXII, so they simply have restore what they already have. Hell some items actually have just as much sheen as some FFXIV models do currently, but due to PS2 rendering they can't fully show it, but if you look at it externally you can see they're higher quality natively, especially later additions.

I have been playing FFXI and now Tesee is going to on a 360 till march.

I am having more fun in FFXI but feel not fulfilled with FFXI either.. It is not the same as it was when I left, so much easier, They now have I level gear, there are teleports everywhere, most content is dead, not much is worth anything on the auction house, crafting still stinks.. Most of my friends are in FFXIV.

When Tesee and I left we had the best of the best now I am not even sure what to do.... I feel so far behind.

The more I play FFXI again the more it feels like it needs a face lift.. Yesterday I was trying to compare gear lol and you cant. The whole interface is clunky.

If they moved FFXI to FFXIV engine it would be sweet.

I am still enjoying it way more than FFXI and have so many different things to do...

You can compare gear actually. Until they add the new UI to the live servers it's a bit weird to get used to.

You talking on the test servers?
I read that probably will never happen anymore.

They added the comparison to live servers, just not the full UI that makes it more obvious. I'm not sure the default key since I rearranged all of my keys and use a Xboxone controller lol.

Well We bought Tesee a xbox 360 again to play FFXI at least for now to see how it would be. She has not touched FFXIV since and she really didn't want to go back to FFXI, LOL. I have a hard time getting her to put FFXI down now.

At this point I will probably cancel my sub for FFXIV and Tes wants to keep hers just for her house for now.. We will eventually go back hopefully.

I know FFXI is just a shell of what it used to be but it is the depth of the game, I do not think FFXIV developers understand it. It is not how hard FFXI is, it is the depth of the game. In FFXI as a healer I actually feel like I matter other than popping heal and ensuna once in a while. I mean I have dia and haste etc. I have to think and can actually have make a difference in a fight. I want to go skill up to make myself better, I want to go get new gear. Nothing makes a difference in FFXIV.

Clothes and stats mean something other than just I-level.

Tesee said the same thing when in battle she has to think about what she does vs some stupid rotation. There is timing.

What amazes me is even though there is a skeleton crew on FFXI they can come up with new creative things in FFXI still.

Even still the game just feels like it need a major over haul.. There is allot in FFXIV that could be used in FFXI. Partyfinder, the whole mission system for example. Getting stuck on every little pebble, Clunky interface. Even still the game still is more fun than FFXIV and the game is not hard anymore but it still is a deep game.

That's the beauty of it - XI has a "Party Finder" system now but since there's low population it's not as used as it could be. Really, all of the monthly updates they've been setting the game up for a type of overhaul, they even moved the inventory more towards server side so while it takes a few to load your inventory, they instantly got around limitations.

It probably won't have major changes until after April 2016, but Matsui definitely sounds like he has plans for making XI stronger. Yoshida's last word on new years seems to still focus on "think of the new player."

Never has a game made me think "well, this could have been useful... YEARS AGO" more often than FFXI has.

fix't

I guess in their defense, at least for XI, it made perfect sense to carry their highest grossing game over to the 360 and PS3. It honestly sounds like they want to keep developing for the PC though. From Matsui's tone it sounds like they have bigger plans for the PC than we think. It's almost like they're holding back any substantial announcements to keep from making console players feel bad.

As much credit as Yoshi deserves for what he's been able to do for XIV, Matsui has been quietly kicking his *** for the past few years. It's not for no reason that I say XI was and is still the better MMO.
