For grammar ****'s. A little tidbit for youFollow

As long as there are message forums online, there will be people correcting spelling/grammar. Don't like it? Make a sock and rate them down, or ignore them all together.

This is an internet message board about a computer game. This is not a college course or a white collar job. Lining up every paragraph perfectly, checking spelling, etc. is not as important in this situation as you people are making it seem. It is also not an indication either way of how smart/stupid a person is....maybe they don't care about grammar/spelling when talking about something as trivial as a video game?

If you can't/don't want to read something because of the way it's typed/spelled....DON'T. Nobody is forcing you people to read anything, yet you act like it's a pain to attempt to read it.

Honestly seeing half these posts with bad spelling/grammar is not as annoying as seeing someone stressing out over it....it's like....do you have a life, to be so upset about something as trivial as spelling/grammar when discussing a video game?

Fred.

{True Strike} Fred. I love when people post "Too long. Rate down."

or something stupid like that. Oh /em changes OP subject to Spelling *****.

If you don't like what you are reading, move on to the next one. Its that simple, but NOOooo, someone or 10 like to see their own typing on a screen.

Hi everyone ^^ that was s spam I got in my emails, thought I would share it with you all. {See you again!}

We had that article handed out to us in our first-year page layout class, to demonstrate the importance of certain markers that define serif fonts. We don't read letters, or even words...we read shapes.

Trouble is...it's a LOT harder to read when it's printed in a sans-serif font, like on these forums, and that may be what's getting people all bent out of shape about it. If you've ever seen it typed out with serifs, you know what I mean. It's actually somewhat witty, then.

Edited for...HA! Grammar!

Okay, I have to admit it: I am a grammar ****. But! You wouldn't know it when I play FFXI. I USED to bother with proper punctuation, spelling, etc.; however, I don't bother anymore because it's a waste of time and sometimes I feel like people understand me better when I use "FFXI-speak".

I'm actually a Communications major, but I have been reduced to certain shorthandisms (although not to the point of "plz g1ve me gillz! pl!" except in cases where I'm being ironic), because of what used to be time constraints (such as between sleeps in BCNM40) that eventually became habit.

I look at it this way: I'm writing to my audience. My audience in game is a group of people who write this way, and in many cases understand it better than "proper" grammar/spelling/punctuation. When I post in the boards, however, most other posters/readers are literate people, so I tend to actually use commas, periods and initial caps.

I, too, feel sorry for those who have been unexposed to proper grammar, etc. From my observations, however, it is through no fault of their own. Schools these days just don't teach grammar outside 'gifted,' 'advanced' or AP classes. I didn't have a single grammar class myself until college. My mother is an English major, so I got thwhacked any time I misused something, so I am lucky.

And please remember: it can ALWAYS be worse. I attend a science/engineering school. There is no worse a writer than an engineer. English111/112 were a walk in the park for me, but many (non-Communications majors) fail it. We make them fix our computers in exchange for proofreading their lab reports. It all works out in the end. ^_^

im not a gammar **** cuz i dnt expct nyone to writ e bettr than me but I requre a bit of effrt so we cn actally undurstend ...

Some people actually really type like that ...

THATS what I hate.

If you write sarcastik because you wanted to write it like that, I don't care. If you didn't put a S after a plural I don't care either, or if you make a typing mistake or dont put a " ' " at "dont" ...

I just like when people sound intelligent and not lazy asshat who can't type half of the word they are writing.

Is it just me, or is the only time anyone ever hears about "Grammer *****" when someone makes a post about them?

The only time i ever see people complain about grammer or spelling it's more of a failed attempt at gaining some sort of self respect after a failed post rather than actually caring about the language. And more often than not i notice people correcting minor spelling errors that most people wouldnt catch without a spell check.

semi-fake example:

OMFG you refuted every point i made and now i look like a moron, but you ended your second sentence in a preposition you noob ***!1!! And its spelled sense not sence dumbass.

Yes, we can figure out lots of crappy spelling. It's an eyestrain to do it, and whatever message someone is trying to convey gets lost because I'm too busy just trying to decipher what you wrote.

Good spelling and puncuation (and paragraphs) make a post easier to read, making it easier to get your point across - assuming you have one.

I read this all in like 10 seconds ~.~ no eyestrain for me

The English language sux, k? Comprehension is what matters-- if you can understand what was said, don't nitpick.

It's not as if what is considered proper in langauge isn't constantly changing anyway.

Reminds me of a Futurama episode-- "Now I'll AX you again," where in the future, the word "ask" is inappropriate and has been replaced by the word "ax".

If you've got time to gripe about someone's grammar you've got time to write a letter to your Congressman requesting them to push for a new langauge which doesn't take students 12 years just to become barely proficient with.

Also, the lack of a universal written/verbal language is disgraceful to humanity.

spelling is not grammar. grammar has to do with the structural relationship of words. more specifically, how to create coherent phrases, sentences, paragraphs etc.

example of poor spelling:
i laick cheez.
example of poor grammar:
cheese in ate chair a i.

however, you do have poor grammar in your first sentence, as it doesn't contain a verb.

props to Climpa, CAustion and SSubZero for pointing this out, but no props to VVillow because he used malicious sarcasm.

This is a very interesting post. I wanted to comment on a recent addition:

If I am reading the example on the first line correctly, the translation is "I like cheese."

Like IS a verb.

In this instance, like is a conjugated form of these possible infinitives: "to be suitable" or "to be agreeable to".

Another example of this type of verb usage is:

"I am short."

Am is the conjugated form of the verb "to be".

But, if you always spell things correctly and use proper grammar in real life, why would you go to EXTRA effort in game or on boards to try NOT to be correct? The excuse many use is that there are fewer letters in words the way they type them incorrectly. In my case though, to use those fewer letters I would have to really 'think' hard and focus carefully, which would take more time than if I just typed as I am used to typing. Baffles me why people who know how to write correctly would bother to expend that extra effort just to 'fit in' with their peers, rather than just be who they are.

Some of us have also seen that there is now an emerging trend of this type of 'communication' showing up in more and more real life business situations. That is somewhat disturbing to me, and I would hope it is to you too. People begin to forget what environment they are in when they frequently practice their form of internet 'ebonics', so, I no longer believe those who say that they don't use it outside of games/boards/etc. Some may not, but, more and more are forgetting and letting it slip into their real lives. How many threads have we had about how some speak gameslang in real life by accident? If that happens, one would expect what I am talking about to happen too.

I know we will never convince those who think it is funny or smart to mangle the English language, but, I am too lazy to do the same and I hope you accept me for who I am as I try to accept you for who you are (even if I have a hard time understanding why those of you who are bright and educated enough to speak correctly would prefer to 'fit in' with those of your peers who are not, rather than trying to help them learn appropriate language).
